Abstract An efficient method inspired by the traditional body of revolution finite-difference time-domain (BOR-FDTD) method is developed to solve the Schrodinger equation for rotationally symmetric problems. As test cases, spherical, cylindrical, cone-like quantum dots, harmonic oscillator, and spherical quantum dot with hydrogenic impurity are investigated to check the efficiency of the proposed method which we coin as Quantum BOR-FDTD (Q-BOR-FDTD) method. The obtained results are analysed and compared to the 3-D FDTD method, and the analytical solutions. Q-BOR-FDTD method proves to be very accurate and time and memory efficient by reducing a three-dimensional problem to a two-dimensional one, therefore one can employ very fine meshes to get very precise results. Moreover, it can be exploited to solve problems including hydrogenic impurities which is not an easy task in the traditional FDTD calculation due to singularity problem. To demonstrate its accuracy, we consider spherical and cone-like core-shell QD with hydrogenic impurity. Comparison with analytical solutions confirms that Q-BOR–FDTD method is very efficient and accurate for solving Schrodinger equation for problems with hydrogenic impurity

Abstract Based on a substrate integrated lens (SIL), a compact line source generator (LSG) for feeding continuous transverse stub (CTS) arrays with linear-polarized (LP) beam scanning and dual-polarized (DP) operations is presented in this paper. The SIL consists of metamaterial cells with different sizes being arranged as concentric annulus and is printed on the center surface of two substrate layers. The SIL can convert the cylindrical wave generated by the feed probe of SIW-horn to the planar wave for feeding the CTS array. This rotationally symmetric SIL can be used conveniently to design LSG for feeding CTS arrays with the continuous beam scanning and DP operations, which has been verified by the fabrications and measurements. By simply rotating the SIW-horn along the edge of SIL, the 10-element LP-CTS array obtains a measured beam scanning range of ±35° with the highest gain of 20.6 dBi. By setting two orthogonal SIW-horns at the edge of the proposed SIL, the nine-element DP-CTS array with orthogonal radiation stubs is excited. The DP array obtains the gain of 20.3 dBi at the center frequency with the isolation of 28 dB and the cross-polarization level <−25 dB.

In this paper, the design and testing of a novel valve for the intuitive spatial control of soft or continuum manipulators are presented. The design of the valve is based on the style of a hydraulic flapper valve, but with simultaneous control of three pressure feed points, which can be used to drive three antagonistically arranged hydraulic actuators for positioning soft robots. The variable control orifices are arranged in a rotationally symmetric radial pattern to allow for an inline mounting configuration of the valve within the body of a manipulator. Positioning the valve ring at various 3D configurations results in different pressurizations of the actuators and corresponding spatial configurations of the manipulator. The design of the valve is suitable for miniaturization and use in applications with size constraints such as small soft manipulators and surgical robotics. Experimental validation showed that the performance of the valve can be reasonably modeled and can effectively drive an antagonistic arrangement of three actuators for soft manipulator control.

AbstractIn this note we obtain some properties of the Cheeger set $$C_\varOmega $$ C Ω associated to a k-rotationally symmetric planar convex body $$\varOmega $$ Ω . More precisely, we prove that $$C_\varOmega $$ C Ω is also k-rotationally symmetric and that the boundary of $$C_\varOmega $$ C Ω touches all the edges of $$\varOmega $$ Ω .
