AbstractWe consider Newton’s problem of minimal resistance, in particular we address the problem arising in the limit if the height goes to infinity. We establish existence of solutions and lack radial symmetry of solutions. Moreover, we show that certain conical parts contained in the boundary of a convex body inhibit the optimality in the classical Newton’s problem with finite height. This result is applied to certain bodies considered in the literature, which are conjectured to be optimal for the classical Newton’s problem, and we show that they are not.

AbstractThe isoperimetric quotient of the whole family of inner and outer parallel bodies of a convex body is shown to be decreasing in the parameter of definition of parallel bodies, along with a characterization of those convex bodies for which that quotient happens to be constant on some interval within its domain. This is obtained relative to arbitrary gauge bodies, having the classical Euclidean setting as a particular case. Similar results are established for different families of Wulff shapes that are closely related to parallel bodies. These give rise to solutions of isoperimetric-type problems. Furthermore, new results on the monotonicity of quotients of other quermassintegrals different from surface area and volume, for the family of parallel bodies, are obtained.

We develop a short-step interior point method to optimize a linear function over a convex body assuming that one only knows a membership oracle for this body. The approach is based a sketch of a universal interior point method using the so-called entropic barrier. It is well known that the gradient and Hessian of the entropic barrier can be approximated by sampling from Boltzmann-Gibbs distributions and the entropic barrier was shown to be self-concordant. The analysis of our algorithm uses properties of the entropic barrier, mixing times for hit-and-run random walks, approximation quality guarantees for the mean and covariance of a log-concave distribution, and results on inexact Newton-type methods.

AbstractWe explore upper bounds on the covering radius of non-hollow lattice polytopes. In particular, we conjecture a general upper bound of d/2 in dimension d, achieved by the “standard terminal simplices” and direct sums of them. We prove this conjecture up to dimension three and show it to be equivalent to the conjecture of González-Merino and Schymura (Discrete Comput. Geom. 58(3), 663–685 (2017)) that the d-th covering minimum of the standard terminal n-simplex equals d/2, for every $$n\ge d$$ n ≥ d . We also show that these two conjectures would follow from a discrete analog for lattice simplices of Hadwiger’s formula bounding the covering radius of a convex body in terms of the ratio of surface area versus volume. To this end, we introduce a new notion of discrete surface area of non-hollow simplices. We prove our discrete analog in dimension two and give strong evidence for its validity in arbitrary dimension.

AbstractIn this note we obtain some properties of the Cheeger set $$C_\varOmega $$ C Ω associated to a k-rotationally symmetric planar convex body $$\varOmega $$ Ω . More precisely, we prove that $$C_\varOmega $$ C Ω is also k-rotationally symmetric and that the boundary of $$C_\varOmega $$ C Ω touches all the edges of $$\varOmega $$ Ω .

AbstractIn hyperbolic geometry there are several concepts to measure the breadth or width of a convex set. In the first part of the paper we collect them and compare their properties. Than we introduce a new concept to measure the width and thickness of a convex body. Correspondingly, we define three classes of bodies, bodies of constant with, bodies of constant diameter and bodies having the constant shadow property, respectively. We prove that the property of constant diameter follows to the fulfilment of constant shadow property, and both of them are stronger as the property of constant width. In the last part of this paper, we introduce the thickness of a constant body and prove a variant of Blaschke’s theorem on the larger circle inscribed to a plane-convex body of given thickness and diameter.

We give a general formula for the $C$-transfinite diameter $\delta_C(K)$ of a compact set $K\subset \mathbb{C}^2$ which is a product of univariate compacta where $C\subset (\mathbb{R}^+)^2$ is a convex body. Along the way we prove a Rumely type formula relating $\delta_C(K)$ and the $C$-Robin function $\rho_{V_{C,K}}$ of the $C$-extremal plurisubharmonic function $V_{C,K}$ for $C \subset (\mathbb{R}^+)^2$ a triangle $T_{a,b}$ with vertices $(0,0)$, $(b,0)$, $(0,a)$. Finally, we show how the definition of $\delta_C(K)$ can be extended to include many nonconvex bodies $C\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ for $d$-circled sets $K\subset \mathbb{C}^d$, and we prove an integral formula for $\delta_C(K)$ which we use to compute a formula for $\delta_C(\mathbb{B})$ where $\mathbb{B}$ is the Euclidean unit ball in $\mathbb{C}^2$.
