Abstract In this paper, design of erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFA) based 16 channel wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) system for different pump powers and input signal levels using counter propagating pumping scheme is reported. Wavelength range between 1548 and 1560 nm in C-band with channel spacing of 0.75 nm at a bit rate of 10 Gbps are used. Input power given to all the channels is taken between −20 and −35 dBm with 3 dBm variation. Pump power levels between 100 and 500 mW at 980 nm wavelength are used. Low gain flatness with high gains and low noise figures are achieved with the proposed scheme.

Abstract Flat gain with least noise figure (NF) is the backbone feature of super dense wavelength division multiplexing (SD-WDM) system. It indicates the good amplification in terms of high-quality factor, lowest bit error rate, and good rating output power. But in this paper, we have mainly focused on characteristics of proposed EDFA-TDFA hybrid optical amplifier (HOA) in terms of flat gain and noise figure for C-Band. Evaluation has done for 400 x 2.455 Gb/s SD-WDM system with channel spacing of 0.8 nm. Moreover, effect of proposed HOA also observed with displacement of channel wavelength for evaluating the impact of different set of HOA for analysis the same characteristics.

Sixteen channel wavelength-division-multiplexed passive optical network (WDM-PON) based on one Mach-Zehnder modulator and carrier suppressed return to zero differential quadrature phase-shift keying (CSRZ-DQPSK) transmitter is designed and evaluated for various bit rates (20 Gbps to 80 Gbps). The effect of changes in transmission distance with increased bit rate is also discussed and hence quality factors and bit error rates are analyzed to evaluate their performances. The relation between transmission distance, quality factor (Q factor) and bit error rate (BER) have been focused to determine optimized result.
