Abstract The Levi theorem tells us that every finite-dimensional Lie algebra is the semi-direct product of a semi-simple Lie algebra and a solvable Lie algebra. Brieskorn gave the connection between simple Lie algebras and simple singularities. Simple Lie algebras have been well understood, but not the solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras. Therefore, it is important to establish connections between singularities and solvable (nilpotent) Lie algebras. In this paper, we give a new connection between nilpotent Lie algebras and nilradicals of derivation Lie algebras of isolated complete intersection singularities. As an application, we obtain the correspondence between the nilpotent Lie algebras of dimension less than or equal to 7 and the nilradicals of derivation Lie algebras of isolated complete intersection singularities with modality less than or equal to 1. Moreover, we give a new characterization theorem for zero-dimensional simple complete intersection singularities.

Abstract It is proved that if $\varphi \colon A\to B$ is a local homomorphism of commutative noetherian local rings, a nonzero finitely generated B-module N whose flat dimension over A is at most $\operatorname {edim} A - \operatorname {edim} B$ is free over B and $\varphi $ is a special type of complete intersection. This result is motivated by a ‘patching method’ developed by Taylor and Wiles and a conjecture of de Smit, proved by the first author, dealing with the special case when N is flat over A.

Abstract We observe some suitable examples of Calabi-Yau threefolds for heterotic superstring compactifications. It is reasonable to seek CY threefolds with Euler characteristic equals ±6 because of generation’s number. Hosotani mechanism for violations of the gauge group by the Wilson loops requires such CY space has a non-trivial fundamental group. These spaces can be obtained by factoring the complete intersection Calabi-Yau spaces by the free action of some discrete group. Also we shortly discuss cases when discrete groups act with fixed point sets.

Abstract We show that the K-moduli spaces of log Fano pairs $\left(\mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^1, cC\right)$ , where C is a $(4,4)$ curve and their wall crossings coincide with the VGIT quotients of $(2,4)$ , complete intersection curves in $\mathbb {P}^3$ . This, together with recent results by Laza and O’Grady, implies that these K-moduli spaces form a natural interpolation between the GIT moduli space of $(4,4)$ curves on $\mathbb {P}^1\times \mathbb {P}^1$ and the Baily–Borel compactification of moduli of quartic hyperelliptic K3 surfaces.

We show that a family of isolated complete intersection singularities (ICIS) with constant total Milnor number has no coalescence of singularities. This extends a well-known result of Gabriélov, Lazzeri and Lê for hypersurfaces. We use A’Campo’s theorem to see that the Lefschetz number of the generic monodromy of the ICIS is zero when the ICIS is singular. We give a pair applications for families of functions on ICIS which extend also some known results for functions on a smooth variety.

Abstract Let Y be a smooth complete intersection of three quadrics, and assume the dimension of Y is even. We show that Y has a multiplicative Chow–Künneth decomposition, in the sense of Shen–Vial. As a consequence, the Chow ring of (powers of) Y displays K3-like behaviour. As a by-product of the argument, we also establish a multiplicative Chow–Künneth decomposition for double planes.

Abstract In this paper, our purpose is to give a characterization of the generic special cubic fourfold which contains a smooth rational surface of degree 9 not homologous to a complete intersection. As corollaries, we will give an explicit construction of families of smooth surfaces in generic special cubic fourfolds X ∈ 𝒞 δ {X\in\mathcal{C}_{\delta}} for 6 < δ ≤ 30 {6<\delta\leq 30} and δ ≡ 0 ( mod 6 ) {\delta\equiv 0~{}(\bmod~{}6)} . This applies in particular to give an explicit construction of two different liaison class of smooth surfaces in all such special cubic fourfolds with the prescribed invariants.

AbstractWe establish the Hodge conjecture for some subvarieties of a class of toric varieties. First we study quasi-smooth intersections in a projective simplicial toric variety, which is a suitable notion to generalize smooth complete intersection subvarieties in the toric environment, and in particular quasi-smooth hypersurfaces. We show that under appropriate conditions, the Hodge conjecture holds for a very general quasi-smooth intersection subvariety, generalizing the work on quasi-smooth hypersurfaces of the first author and Grassi in Bruzzo and Grassi (Commun Anal Geom 28: 1773–1786, 2020). We also show that the Hodge Conjecture holds asymptotically for suitable quasi-smooth hypersurface in the Noether–Lefschetz locus, where “asymptotically” means that the degree of the hypersurface is big enough, under the assumption that the ambient variety $${{\mathbb {P}}}_\Sigma ^{2k+1}$$ P Σ 2 k + 1 has Picard group $${\mathbb {Z}}$$ Z . This extends to a class of toric varieties Otwinowska’s result in Otwinowska (J Alg Geom 12: 307–320, 2003).

AbstractThere is a strange duality between the quadrangle isolated complete intersection singularities discovered by the first author and Wall. We derive this duality from a variation of the Berglund–Hübsch transposition of invertible polynomials introduced in our previous work about the strange duality between hypersurface and complete intersection singularities using matrix factorizations of size two.
