To invest effort into any cognitive task, people must be sufficiently motivated. Whereas prior research has focused primarily on how the cognitive control required to complete these tasks is motivated by the potential rewards for success, it is also known that control investment can be equally motivated by the potential negative consequence for failure. Previous theoretical and experimental work has yet to examine how positive and negative incentives differentially influence the manner and intensity with which people allocate control. Here, we develop and test a normative model of control allocation under conditions of varying positive and negative performance incentives. Our model predicts, and our empirical findings confirm, that rewards for success and punishment for failure should differentially influence adjustments to the evidence accumulation rate versus response threshold, respectively. This dissociation further enabled us to infer how motivated a given person was by the consequences of success versus failure.

Biosand filters (BSFs) are increasingly designed using smaller and/or lighter casing material in an effort to reduce logistical requirements and implementation costs. The increased portability of a smaller, lighter design presents a potential negative consequence: the ability to move the installed/operational filter by the homeowner and potentially disturb the system. This study investigated the effects of moving and agitation on filter performance, using mature BSFs which had been in use for over nine months prior to the move. Data were analyzed for four replicate filters of three different filter types: the traditional concrete BSF and two plastic bucket (5-gal and 2-gal, respectively; 5-gal bucket = 18.9-L bucket, 2-gal bucket = 7.6-L bucket) BSFs. Filters were moved approximately 1 km and monitored for hydraulic loading rates (HLRs) and Escherichia coli removal for 8 weeks following the move. Moving the filters resulted in reduced HLRs, likely due to sand compaction, but E. coli removal remained high (log10 removal ≥2.8 for all sizes) and increased significantly as compared to data collected prior to the move. The resulting operational implications of moving BSFs are discussed.

The functional significance of error-related negativity (Ne/ERN), which occurs at approximately the same time as erroneous responses, has been investigated extensively using reaction time (RT) tasks. The error detection theory assumes that the Ne/ERN reflects the mismatch detected by comparing representations of the intended and the actually performed actions. The conflict monitoring theory asserts that the Ne/ERN reflects the detection of response conflict between intended and actually performed actions during response selection. In this study, we employed a gambling task in which participants were required to choose whether they would take part in betting in each trial and they were presented with gain or loss feedback in both the “to bet” and the “not to bet” trials. The response-locked ERP magnitudes were more negative for “to bet” than for “not to bet” choices for both large and small stakes and were more negative for choices involving large rather than small stakes. Dipole source analysis localized the ERP responses to the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). These findings suggest that the ACC signals the riskiness of choices and may function as an early warning system that alerts the brain to prepare for the potential negative consequence associated with a risky action.
