Abstract Different from the method by plane-wave interference, here an efficient approach is proposed to generate optical vortex array (VA) based on lateral-shearing interferometer (LSI), in which the evolution from light spot array to VA can be observed by continuously variable shear ratio in a certain range. VAs with topological charge 2 and 1 are simulated by software GLAD and proved to be effectiveness through optical experiment. Theoretical analysis and experimental results show that when the shear ratio approaches to zero, we can stably obtain a vortex array with high density and variable topological charge.

Abstract An integrated device capable of generating large number of multiplexed optical vortex beams with arbitrary topological charges is considered as one of the crucial requirement for driving information photonics forward. Here we report a simple method for simultaneous generation of 100 multiplexed optical vortex beams from a polymer film of size 1mm2 and thickness of 30µm. This is achieved through a combination of computer generated holography, digital hologram printing and photoisomeric polymers. When the fabricated sample is illuminated with a collimated laser beam, a predetermined vortex array with arbitrary topological charge is emitted. The polymer film easy to synthesise and exhibits good diffraction efficiency and long retention time.

AbstractVortex beams carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM), which featuring helical phase front, have been regarded as an alternative spatial degree of freedom for optical mode coding and multiplexing. For most reported OAM-based mode coding schemes, data information is only encoded by different OAM mode states. In this paper, we introduce a novel design technique to construct vortex array phase grating (VAPGs) for the flexible generation of vortex arrays, and employ the proposed VAPGs to realize multi-dimensional space/mode/amplitude coding/decoding. By designing VAPGs with different parameters and loading them on to a single spatial light modulator (SLM), we successfully generate vortex array with different mode states and relative power in the experiments. Moreover, a 10-bit multi-dimensional space/mode/amplitude data coding/decoding scheme for image transfer in free-space link with a zero bit-error-rate is experimentally demonstrated, which confirm the feasibility of our proposed VAPG-based coding/decoding scheme.
