In this article the different functions of Italian poi are described and analysed from a cartographic perspective. We show that in addition to its use as a temporal adverb (after, then), poi can be used as a temporal or logical connective adverb, as a discourse marker and as a modal particle. These functions can be correlated with different positions in the clause and with differences in the internal structure of the element itself. Finally, we identify the syntactic environments and sentence types in which poi occurs in its function as a modal particle, as well as the special interpretations that are associated with its presence.

This study focuses on the importance of strengthening intercultural awareness among future Primary School teachers. Intercultural communicative competence plays a fundamental role in developing an honest and productive dialogue among people, whatever their origin, language or cultural heritage, and prospective teachers will be responsible for training the ‘good interculturalists’ of tomorrow. A survey was conducted among students attending a degree course for Primary Education Teachers to highlight what knowledge, practices and skills they have acquired regarding intercultural competence and whether they are able to deal with and successfully apply the notions of plurilingual and intercultural competence to their teaching practices.

Based on first-hand collected data, the article analyses a number of code-switching occurrences in multilingual chats among a community of English teachers in the Fes-Meknes region of Morocco. The data are compared with the results of a perceptual questionnaire on linguistic self-assessments and also take into account the orthographic aspect of the messages. The complex sociolinguistic framework of the area vividly emerges, as well as the real and perceived status of the varieties and the relationships between codes. The result is a coherent combination of Standard Arabic, dialectal Arabic, French and English.

The aim of this preliminary study is to better understand the effects of transparent, surgical, cloth, KN95 (FFP2), and singer’s face masks on speech and singing in French. A survey gathered self-perception, and a local and global acoustic analysis of conversational, loud spoken and sung productions by the same individual were conducted. According to the 303 subjects surveyed, plosive consonants seem to be produced with the greatest difficulty. Consonants requiring lip involvement seem to be the most affected. The transparent and KN95 (FFP2) masks attenuate the intensity of all the consonants and spoken utterances as a whole, unlike the singer’s mask.

Within the field of Second Language Acquisition, a growing interest has been devoted to interlanguage pragmatics, in particular how L2 speakers use the linguistic means by which a given language conveys politeness. Being the speech act of ‘request’ one of the most frequent and salient Face Threatening Acts, the current study investigates whether and to what extent L2 learners of Russian and Italian transfer their L1 pragmatic strategies into their L2 when required to perform a request. Qualitative and quantitative analysis has been conducted on data collected among (i) N=9 Russian L1 learners of Italian L2 via role plays and (ii) N=38 Italian L1 learners of Russian L2 via discourse completion tasks. In particular, we will compare L1 and L2 production of head acts, modification, and orientedness.
