Chromosomal segments underlying quantitative trait loci for mohair production in Angora goats

SummaryThis study reports the results obtained in the search of chromosomal regions affecting fleece traits in a population of Angora goats in the Argentinean Patagonia. Six hundred thirty-four offspring from 14 parental half-sib families were used. Nine phenotypic fleece traits were recorded at 4 and 11 months of age. A genome examination using 85 informative molecular markers was conducted. A linkage analysis was performed using a regression interval analysis. Our study identified 10 genomic regions affecting the average fibre diameter, coefficient of variation of the average fibre diameter, percentage of fibres with diameters over 30 µm, greasy fleece weight, staple length, average curvature of fibres, percentage of continuous medullated fibres and percentage of kemp fibres located on five goat chromosomes (1, 2, 5, 13 and 19). These results show that the average size of the quantitative trait loci effect was 1.6 phenotypic standard deviations for different traits and families. The aims of quantitative trait loci detection is the potential use of these molecular markers to increase accuracy in predicting the genetic merit of breeding and its implementation in animal breeding schemes through marker-assisted selection.

Papel de las pastoras Tzotziles en la conservación de la diversidad del ganado lanar de Chiapas

ResumenEste trabajo describe el importante papel que han tenido las pastoras de la etnia Tzotzil que habitan en las montañas de Chiapas, al sur de México, no sólo en el rescate histórico de varias razas españolas de ovejas, sino en la conservación de la biodiversidad de esta especie. Por el legado de su milenaria cultura Maya y la histórica mezcla con la religión católica, las pastoras Tzotziles son responsables de cuidar a sus ovejas sagradas, que reciben nombres propios y cuidados especiales. Las mujeres también se encargan de elaborar las ropas que identifican a su grupo étnico. Estas ropas típicas se elaboran con lana que es obtenida de las ovejas locales de la raza Chiapas, para luego ser procesada por medio de técnicas textiles artesanales como son el hilado manual y el tejido en telar de cintura de diseño prehispánico. La ropa de uso cotidiano y ceremonial de los hombres y las mujeres Tzotziles incluye abrigos de lana negra, cotones o ponchos de lana blanca, pesadas faldas negras, blusas de color café y chales negros, todos ellos hechos de lana, lo cual ha representado la necesidad de conservar la diversidad animales de distintos fenotipos dentro de los rebaños mantenidos bajo un sistema tradicional de manejo.

Producción de fibra de alpaca, llama, vicuña y guanaco en Sudamérica

ResumenMás de un millón de pequeños productores de los Andes centrales de Sudamérica tienen alpacas (Vicugna pacos) y llamas (Lama glama) como principal medio de subsistencia. Los animales proveen carne, leche, fibra, energía de transporte y guano y, además, son un elemento importante de la identidad cultural de sus pueblos. Con 3,9 millones de llamas y 3,3 millones de alpacas la producción total de fibras de camélidos en la región supera los 5 millones de kg anuales. Cerca del 30% de la producción de fibra se transforma y es usada a nivel de predio o comunidad. Alrededor del 80% de la alpaca comercializada es de color blanco y el 12% tiene diámetros de fibra menores de 23 micrones. Las fibras de llama son de menor valor y más variables en colores y diámetros que las fibras de alpaca. Ambas especies tienen dos razas, cada una con características de calidad de fibra y adaptación específica. También existen en Sudamérica dos especies de camélidos silvestres, el guanaco (Lama guanicoe) y la vicuña (Vicugna vicugna). Ambas tienen vellones de valiosa fibra down. Poblaciones específicas de estos camélidos califican para ser capturadas, esquiladas y liberadas generando un ingreso adicional a las comunidades en que viven. El aumento de la producción de fibras y demás productos de los camélidos sudamericanos, a la vez de preservar un recurso genético animal crítico y los valores culturales asociados y mejorar la calidad de vida de muchos pequeños productores, debe ser parte de una estrategia global de inversión sostenida en investigación y desarrollo apropiados.

Navajo-Churro sheep and wool in the United States

Census numbers are now close to 3000 head as the breed moves beyond its original homeland to become more widely established throughout the United States.

Conservation of the Alpines Steinschaf

SummaryThe Alpines Steinschaf is an old and traditional sheep breed living in the Alps for several hundred years. In 1985 only a few small flocks of this breed could be identified in special alpine regions in Germany. A breeding programme was established by some interested breeders and official breeding organisations. To maintain rare breeds for the future, it is necessary to develop special programmes for their use and marketing. In 2004 the breeders in Germany and Austria created a programme to market high quality products made of Alpines Steinschaf wool. The project ran very successfully, and the population of the Alpines Steinschaf has been increasing annually since then.
