A study is made on the kinetic salt effect on the reaction of hydrolysis of several charged esters in alkaline media. The results are interpreted on the basis of the coulombic interaction, the salting in of hydroxide ion and a third component depending on size of the substrate.

We have studied the regioselectivity of Michael type additions on tropones attached to quinoxalines, i.e. dialkoxycarbonyl quinoxalinotropones. We used carbon nucleophiles (ethyl malonate and malononitrile), oxygen nucleophiles (sodium methoxide), sulphur nucleophiles (methyl and benzyl mercaptans), and nitrogen nucleophiles (methyl and phenylhydrazine, aniline). We have shown that, in general, these reactions lead to 1,4-monoadditions or to bridged products arising from a bis-1,4-addition process. We have determined the structures of the complexes obtained by comparison to the work of Fohlisch etal. in the homoaromatic series. For the case of substituted hydrazines, we present some evidence on the rearrangement mechanisms proposed by these authors. [Journal translation]

New polyesters with basic units containing 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, and 14 chain atoms have been prepared from levo-2,3-butanediol and ethyl oxalate, ethyl malonate, dimethyl terephthalate, maleic anhydride, succinic, glutaric, adipic, azelaic, and sebacic acids, and from meso-2,3-butanediol and o-phthalic anhydride. Esterification of 2,3-butanediol with a dibasic acid, or its anhydride, is accompanied by a side reaction, in which butanone-2 and the cyclic methyl ethyl ketal are formed. The purified polyesters, with the exception of the poly-malonate, appear to be composed of regularly recurring acid and diol segments over the molecular weight ranges investigated. Without exception they are amorphous resins or balsams. Polyesters formed from saturated aliphatic dibasic acids become progressively softer as the number of methylene groups in the acid segment increases. The polymeric oxalate, on distillation in vacuo, is converted to a macrocrystalline cyclic monomer.

Monosubstituted benzoylacetic esters C6H5COCH(R)CO2C2H5 (R = H, CnH2n+1 (n = 1 to 9), and C6H5CH2) obtained by the condensation of n-alkyl halides with ethyl benzoylacetate were reacted with o-, m-, and p-chlorophenyl hydrazines to give 1-chlorophenyl-3-phenyl-4-alkyl-5-pyrazolones. Pyrazolones-4-C14 were prepared by the action of the same hydrazines on ethyl benzoylacetate-α-C14 obtained from benzoyl chloride and ethyl malonate-2-C14. Their activities were 801, 894, and 847 c./min. respectively. The ultraviolet and infrared absorption spectra of all the pyrazolones were determined and the most probable structures ascribed to the compounds.
