During the last decade, entomologists have made progress in understanding the environment in which certain insects live; in particular, we begin to understand the effect of certain physical and chemical factors, which make up a part of the environment. With this gain in knowledge, it is sometimes possible to forecast outbreaks of insects and of diseases conveyed by them, and one can sometimes say that a particular alteration of the environment will result in loss or gain. But so far as mosquitos are concerned, one must admit that though much work has been devoted to the analytical study of the water in which the early stages are passed, the results are disappointing. A consideration of the published work suggests several reasons for this. Investigation into the ecology of the mosquito has had a vogue, and much of it has been done by workers who were isolated and whose knowledge of chemical technique and freshwater biology was limited. Apart from that, the inherent difficulties are great, for the worker must hunt for the limiting chemical and physical factors among a host of others which are doubtless unimportant, and there are few clues to indicate which of the chemical constituents of the water affects the mosquito. The data are therefore voluminous and it is difficult to reduce them to order and present them so that they can be readily understood.

In this paper a modified silicone softener was used on the finishing of stain repellent stain release and wrinkle resistance fabrics. The concentrations of silicone softener, durable press resin CTA-705 and process conditions on the properties of treated fabrics were investigated. In analyzing the results, the fabric's softness rating, smoothness and wrinkle recovery angle (WRA) increased with the increase of softener concentration. The use of softener has little effect on the fabrics soil release and oil repellency. Wrinkle recovery angle increased remarkably and softness rating decreased steadily with the increase of CTA-705 concentration. Soil release, oil repellency and softness rating of the treated fabrics increased steadily when the cured temperature was raised from 140°C to 170°C.

To understand the diversities of diazotrophs and denitrifiers in red paddy soil under long-term fertilization conditions, nifH, nirK and nosZ libraries were constructed based on the PCR-RFLP method. nirK gene diversity proved to be lower than that of nosZ and nifH, and nirK and nosZ genes were more sensitive to different fertilization treatments than those with the nifH gene. Diverse microbes including the α-, β-, γ- and δ- subclasses of the Proteobacteria dominated the three libraries. Long-term addition of urea with straw-mulching and azophoska increased the abundance of non-symbiotic diazotrophs, which indicated that non-symbiotic diazotrophs were responsible for the majority of the nitrogen-fixing ability in paddy soil. In addition, a potential link between nifH and nosZ was found due to the existence of nitrogen fixers, such as Bradyrhizobium and Ralstonia in the nosZ library. The main chemical factors affecting the three genes were identified, pH was the most important factor of nifH community, and nirK genes were more affected by pH and organic matter, available potassium and carbon to nitrogen ratio significantly influenced the community structure of the nosZ genes.
