Purpose: To describe the postoperative progressive course of advanced-stage adenocarcinoma arising from a mature cystic teratoma (MCT) and review the literature regarding this disease. Methods: A 59-year-old woman visited our hospital with an abdominal mass. Laparotomy showed enlargement of the left ovary and dissemination throughout the abdominal and pelvic cavities. The diagnosis was FIGO stage IIIB adenocarcinoma arising from a MCT. We report this case in detail with a review of the literature. Results: A literature search yielded 9 cases of stage III adenocarcinoma with malignant transformation. Six of these 9 patients died within 12 months after diagnosis. Of the 8 patients who underwent postoperative chemotherapy, 3 survived for over 39 months. The review indicates that prognosis of adenocarcinoma is as poor as that for squamous cell carcinoma arising from a MCT. Conclusions: In general, as with this case, prognosis of advanced adenocarcinoma associated with a MCT is poor. However, we should be aware that not all patients are resistant to chemotherapy.

Adenomyomas are benign tumors composed of smooth muscle and endometrial tissue. These tumors usually arise from the myometrium. Extrauterine adenomyomas are rare with only a few case reports available in the literature. Here, we report an unusual case of multiple adenomyomas in a 39-year-old woman six years after hysterectomy for multiple leiomyomata. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of extrauterine adenomyoma presenting as an upper abdominal mass.

Laparoscopic operations offer a myriad of advantages resulting in a rapid postoperative recovery. Incisional hernia is an uncommon cause of morbidity in operative procedures performed by laparoscopic access, and the diagnosis may not be easily made. In our service we identified 2 patients with incisional hernia the site of trocar insertion. The records of these 2 cases were reviewed. We report on these 2 cases and present a review of the literature.

Trocar site hernia (TSH) is a type of incisional hernia occurring at the trocar sites after minimal invasive surgeries, most often in adult patients with non-sutured trocar sites. This is a case report of a 5 mm trocar site omental herniation six years after laparoscopic appendectomy in a nine-year-old boy to emphasize that incisions should be closed using fascial and cutaneous sutures, regardless of trocar size and localization, to prevent TSH. We conducted a brief review of the literature on this topic.

We report on a very large renal leiomyoma in a man presentingwith a 1-year history of lower back and flank pain and a rapidlygrowing abdominal mass. Since a cystic renal cell carcinomacould not be ruled out, a postembolization right radical nephrectomywas performed. Diagnosis was confirmed by pathologic andhistologic analysis. Renal leiomyomas are very rare benign tumoursthat are nearly indistinguishable from leiomyosarcoma or renalcell carcinoma preoperatively. This case represents the secondlargest such entity reported and demonstrates the limited abilityof accurate diagnostic determination preoperatively, with pathologicexamination and immune-histochemical staining postnephrectomyrepresenting the only definitive means of diagnosis. A briefreview of the literature and an outline of typical clinical and pathologicfeatures of renal leiomyomas are also presented.

Gastric teratomas are extremely rare tumors. A six year old boy presented with abdominal mass. Ultrasound of abdomen showed mixed echogenic lesion. CT scan showed a mass with solid and cystic components and internal calcifications. At operation a tumor arising from the posterior wall of the stomach was found. It was exogastric as well as endogastric in location. Histopathological examination revealed a mature teratoma.DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.3329/birdem.v2i2.12329(Birdem Med J 2012; 2(2): 121-123)
