How does surveillance shape political science research in the United States? In comparative and international politics, there is a rich literature concerning the conduct of research amid conditions of conflict and state repression. As this literature locates “the field” in distant contexts “over there,” the United States continues to be saturated with various forms of state control. What this portends for American politics research has thus far been examined by a limited selection of scholars. Expanding on their insights, I situate “the field” in the United States and examine surveillance of American Muslims, an understudied case of racialized state control. Drawing on qualitative data from a case study of sixty-nine interviews with Arab and Black American Muslims, I argue that surveillance operated as a two-stage political mechanism that mapped onto research methodologically and substantively. In the first stage, surveillance reconfigured the researcher-researchee dynamic, hindered recruitment and access, and limited data-collection. In the second stage, surveillance colored the self-perceptions, political attitudes, and civic engagement of respondents, thereby indicating a political socialization unfolding among Muslims. The implications of this study suggest that researchers can mitigate against some, but not all, of the challenges presented by surveillance and concomitant forms of state control.

The growth of the randomized controlled trial (RCT) as the “gold standard” for evaluation has justly been praised as an advance in the professionalization of social programs and projects, an “adoption of science” - in the words of the Lancet. None the less, the emphasis on the RCT biases funding for projects that distribute private goods and which focus on “low hanging fruit” in health, nutrition, and sanitation, simply because those areas lend themselves to the sort of measurement that works with RCTs. As a result, many project developers in the government and NGO sectors lament that a hegemonic focus on RCTs impedes creativity or new models that challenge traditional paradigms. This case study of CanalCanoa, a community video coaching project for indigenous parents of young children in the Rio Negro region of the Amazon Basin, offers techniques to measure for innovation. Instead of developing a new RCT for an extremely diverse population (27 ethnic groups) where traditional childcare methods are in historical flux because of urbanization, CanalCanoa measured variables shown by previous RCTs to be causally connected with positive development results. By researching the impact of the intervention on nutrition, language (multilingualism, use of traditional songs and stories), and social network expansion, CanalCanoa measured upstream indicators, thus mixing scientific rigor with an opportunity for innovation and providing important insight and reform of a theory of change.

Abstract Introduction/Objective Nasopharyngeal (NP) swabs have been the traditional specimen source used for testing for respiratory viruses. However, at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, several studies suggested that saliva could also be used as a specimen source for testing for SARS-CoV-2. Despite potential benefits, there was limited data on the characteristics of this specimen type and few commercial assays with FDA emergency use authorization allowed saliva as a specimen source. In order to explore the feasibility and validate using saliva as a specimen source for ambulatory and emergency department patients we designed a study to compare saliva to NP swabs for SARS-CoV-2 testing. Methods/Case Report Specimens were collected in the emergency department and ambulatory testing sites between May 6, 2020-July 7, 2020. Nasopharyngeal swabs were collected as part of routine clinical practice and patients were given written instructions to self-collect 1mL of saliva into a sterile specimen cup with or without a straw. SARS-CoV-2 testing was performed in parallel with both specimen types using the TaqPath COVID-19 Combo Kit (Thermo Fisher Waltham, MA). Saliva was diluted 1:1 in saline prior to testing. Specimens were transported to the lab at 4C and frozen at -80C prior to testing. Results (if a Case Study enter NA) Seventy-four patients had both an NP swab and saliva tested in this study. Thirty of the 74 patients (41%) were unable to produce the full 1mL of saliva requested, but all samples had sufficient volume for testing after dilution. There were 34 positive samples obtained with an 82% positive agreement between the NP swabs and saliva. In 6 cases, the NP swab was positive, and the paired saliva was negative. In 1 case, only the saliva was positive. The average Ct of the positive NP swabs with a paired negative saliva sample was 39.6. There was only a single invalid test for one of the saliva samples. Conclusion Saliva was a straightforward sample to collect and test for SARS-CoV-2. Challenges included obtaining sufficient sample and a less predictable matrix that required dilution to ensure proper pipeting. In this study, NP swabs were more sensitive for detection of SARS-CoV-2. Paired saliva was more often negative in patients shedding small amounts of SARS-CoV-2 based on a high Ct of the positive NP sample.

Abstract. Through long-range transport of dust, the Sahara desert supplies essential minerals to the Amazon rain forest. Since Saharan dust reaches South America mostly during the Northern Hemisphere winter, the dust sources active during winter are the main contributors to the forest. Given that the Bodélé depression area in Southwestern Chad is the main winter dust source, a close link is expected between the Bodélé emission patterns and volumes and the mineral supply flux to the Amazon. Until now, the particular link between the Bodélé and the Amazon forest was based on sparse satellite measurements and modeling studies. In this study, we combine a detailed analysis of space-borne and ground data with reanalysis model data and surface measurements taken in the Central Amazon during the Amazonian Aerosol Characterization Experiment (AMAZE-08) in order to explore the validity and the nature of the proposed link between the Bodélé depression and the Amazon forest. This case study follows the dust events of 11–16 and 18–27 February 2008, from the emission in the Bodélé over West Africa, the crossing of the Atlantic Ocean, to the observed effects above the Amazon canopy about 10 days after the emission. The dust was lifted by surface winds stronger than 14 m s−1, usually starting early in the morning. The lofted dust mixed with biomass burning aerosols over Nigeria, was transported over the Atlantic Ocean, and arrived over the South American continent. The top of the aerosol layer reached above 3 km, and the bottom merged with the marine boundary layer. The arrival of the dusty air parcel over the Amazon forest increased the average concentration of aerosol crustal elements by an order of magnitude.
