Purpose This paper aims to explore the current condition of the Big Data concept with its related barriers, drivers, opportunities and perceptions in the architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) industry with an emphasis on facilities management (FM). Design/methodology/approach Following a comprehensive literature review, the Big Data concept was investigated through two scoping workshops with industry experts and academics. Findings The value in data analytics and Big Data is perceived by the industry, yet the industry needs guidance and leadership. Also, the industry recognises the imbalance between data capturing and data analytics. Large IT vendors’ developing AEC industry-focused analytics solutions and better interoperability among different vendors are needed. The general concerns for Big Data analytics mostly apply to the AEC industry as well. Additionally, however, the industry suffers from a structural fragmentation for data integration with many small-sized companies operating in its supply chains. This paper also identifies a number of drivers, challenges and way-forwards that calls for future actions for Big Data in FM in the AEC industry. Originality/value The nature of data in the business world has dramatically changed over the past 20 years. This phenomenon is often broadly dubbed as “Big Data” with its distinctive characteristics, opportunities and challenges. Some industries have already started to effectively exploit “Big Data” in their business operations. However, despite many perceived benefits, the AEC industry has been slow in discussing and adopting the Big Data concept. Empirical research efforts investigating Big Data for the AEC industry are also scarce. This paper aims at outlining the benefits, challenges and future directions (what to do) for Big Data in the AEC industry with an FM focus.

<p>Facilities Management (FM) industry players must be mindful of the current economic digitisation. It aims to empower the community and industry players with digital skills and digital-based businesses. Positively, this also will benefit FM industry players. Therefore, many FM organisations are starting to take advantage on IoT, big data analytics and mobile phone application in their activities. This paper utilised a literature review to discover the application of IoT, big data analytics and mobile application in FM processes. Then, a case study on Al Nabooda Chulia Facilities Management Co LLC (AN.C) success story as the recipient of Urbanise Smart City Pioneer Award 2017 were cross-examined on the tools they use in digitisation FM. The novelty from the integration of IoT, big data analytics and mobile phone application towards digitisation FM has significantly reducing management costs and improving facilities performance and service quality. The paper highlight an example of digitisation of FM activities that successfully optimising and innovating the current FM practices with the paradigm shift from cost management towards value creation in the future.<strong> </strong></p>

Purpose This paper aims to investigate data elements, transfer, gaps and the challenges to implement data analytics in facilities management. The goal is not to search for a definite solution but to gather necessary information, understand the challenges faced and develop a proper foundation for future study. Design/methodology/approach This paper used a case study approach with a qualitative method. The case of the Georgia Institute of Technology was investigated by having a semi-structured interview with six relevant personnel. The recorded interview content was analyzed and presented based on six work processes. Findings Higher education institutions are taking initiatives but facing challenges in implementing data analytics. There were 36 software tools used to manage different aspects of facilities at Georgia Tech. Identified data elements and data processing indicated that major challenges for data-driven decision-making were inconsistency in data input and structure, the issue of interoperability among different software tools and a lack of software training. Research limitations/implications The authors only interviewed individuals who work closely with data gathering, transfer and processing. Thus, the study did not explore the perspective of individuals in the leadership level or the user group level. Originality/value Facilities management departments in higher education institutions perform multi-disciplinary functions, including building automation, continuous commissioning and preventative maintenance, all of which are data- and technology-intensive. Managing this overwhelming amount of information is often a challenge, but well-planned data analytics can be used to draw keen insights about any aspect of facilities management and operations and assist in evidence-based decision-making.

This paper presents the analysis of Building Information Model usage in Facilities Management. The main Facility Management aspects and problems are analyzed and advantages and disadvantages of Building Information Model are evaluated, opinions about BIM development and use in facilities management. The effectiveness of BIM use in the Facilities Management is analyzed with the help of SWOT analysis. The guidelines to the Facility Management company for using BIM are created.

Big Data & Analytics (BDA) ist zu einer kaum hinterfragten Institution für Effizienz und Wettbewerbsvorteil von Unternehmen geworden. Zu viele prominente Beispiele, wie der Erfolg von Google oder Amazon, scheinen die Bedeutung zu bestätigen, die Daten und Algorithmen zur Erlangung von langfristigen Wettbewerbsvorteilen zukommt. Sowohl die Praxis als auch die Wissenschaft scheinen geradezu euphorisch auf den „Datenzug“ aufzuspringen. Wenn Risiken thematisiert werden, dann handelt es sich meist um ethische Fragen. Dabei wird häufig übersehen, dass die diskutierten Vorteile sich primär aus einer operativen Effizienzperspektive ergeben. Strategische Wirkungen werden allenfalls in Bezug auf Geschäftsmodellinnovationen diskutiert, deren tatsächlicher Innovationsgrad noch zu beurteilen ist. Im Folgenden soll gezeigt werden, dass durch BDA zwar Wettbewerbsvorteile erzeugt werden können, dass aber hiermit auch große strategische Risiken verbunden sind, die derzeit kaum beachtet werden.
