This study examines some effects on preservice elementary teachers of a combined mathematics and mathematics methods course that used manipulative materials as the primary means of learning. The effects investigated were changes in trainee desire to use, ability to use, and actual use of manipulative materials in teaching; changes in trainee desire or actual behavior with respect to teaching in a learner-focused manner; changes in trainee understanding of elementary mathematics; differences between learning in a concrete, physical way and learning in a symbolic, abstract way; and changes in trainee attitudes of enjoyment of and feelings of competence in teaching mathematics.

Prospective elementary mathematics teachers (PTs) were asked to analyze 28 videos of cognitive interviews. The purpose of this study was to determine if experiences analyzing videos would lead to improvements in PTs’ professional noticing skills. Using a coding schema that reflected three levels of understanding (periphery, transitional, and accomplished), a frequency table was constructed that allowed PTs’ use and understanding of a noticing framework to be analyzed. Findings indicate that experiences analyzing videos leads to improvements in PTs’ professional noticing skills.

The stage was set. A preservice elementary teacher entered Mrs. Burnell's seventh-grade classroom, wearing a raincoat and holding a flashlight, and stole a poster placed on the front board. The middle school students were stunned. What just happened? Several minutes later, four preservice elementary teachers entered the classroom and began acting out a dramatization based on a chapter of Balliett's novel Chasing Vermeer (2004). They selected a scene in which characters in the book use pentominoes to try to solve a mystery, which was a perfect segue into the mathematics lesson that follows.
