This article deals with several constructions used in Hebrew to express material constitution. In Revival Hebrew, there are three different constructions in parallel use, all of which are also documented in earlier strata of Hebrew. These structures will be examined and compared to the former stages of the language and to their equivalents in contact languages. The article discusses the internal influences on these constructions, examines the effect of contact languages and register on the choice of structure, and also briefly compares the situation in Revival Hebrew with the situation in Contemporary Hebrew.

The article is dedicated to the iconostasis of the Assumption Cathedral in Okhtyrka (1738). The iconostasis was installed at the expense of O. Lesevytsky (a colonel of Okhtyrka regiment and a brigadier of Sloboda regiments). The icons were painted by Kharkiv icon painter V. Dmitriev. While painting he was working in Kiev‑Pechersk Laura. The iconostasis of the Assumption Cathedral became an example of an innovative decision of altar partitions not only in Slobozhanshchyna, but also in the whole of Ukraine. The altar partitions reflected the stylistic innovations relevant for the first half of the 18th century – a combination of Rococo and Classicism. The iconostasis of 1738 demonstrates that the spread of these styles in Slobozhanshchyna took place much earlier than in Central and Western Ukraine, and the sacred art of Slobozhanshchyna regiments had its own path of development. The iconostasis of the Assumption Cathedral became the first altar partition, which broke with traditional for Ukraine and, in particular, for Slobozhanshchyna, stylistic and iconographic decisions of altar partitions. It can be considered the first altar partition, which opens a new era in the history of Ukrainian iconostasis. A new solution for iconostasis in Slobozhanshchyna was the introduction of the metric type in the construction of tiers (the rhythmic type was traditionally used before that), the elimination of the Deisus tier, which was replaced by a large-format Holiday tier. The iconostasis also shows internal influences. Thus, the Sovereign tier of the iconostasis presented images of Christ, the Birth‑Giver of God and saints, depicted in full length, which was widespread in Kyiv and had not previously been typical in Slobozhanshchyna (traditionally the Sovereign (bottom) tier of the iconostasis in Slobozhanshchyna consisted of half‑length images). A new solution of the Sovereign tier of the iconostasis was probably proposed by V. Dmitriev, who could transfer part of Kyiv icon-painting tradition to Slobozhanshchyna.

Using concepts from Kelly and Foucault, analysis of interviews in the mid-1990s with staff in an English open prison explores how contrasting discourses are reconciled. Two superficially antagonistic discursive formations within prison practice are described: a discourse of discipline/control and an ethic of reform and reclaiming “spoiled” criminals for good and productive life. While rhetorically at odds, they are reconciled in the working practices of prison staff, with discipline as a necessary precondition for reform. The open prisons stand for the rehabilitative ethic and the staff are proud of their work, but by the 1990s prison policy had begun to dissociate itself from promises of reform, in response to research conclusions that residential care was ineffective. This case study shows how discourses survive when they are disowned by their “owners.” The research has wider implications for an understanding of hierarchical relationships between discourses and construct-sets that prescribe different practices.

Abstract This article examines the role of gift exchanges in political relations between the East India Company and the Mughal imperial administration. Focusing on the period 1670–1720, it discusses the items selected for presentation, the occasions at which they changed hands, and the hierarchical relationships expressed and acknowledged through these transactions. It argues that in exchanges both with the central court and with provincial authorities, transfers of valuables in cash and kind between English and Indian actors were embedded in a wider imperial discourse regarding sovereignty and service. By acknowledging the continuum running from courtly engagements to everyday political interactions at local sites of power, a notion of Company diplomacy comes into view that straddled the boundaries between inter-polity relations and intra-imperial solicitation. As such, the case study invites us to rethink our notion of diplomacy as it pertained to relations between the English Company and Mughal state.

How is the macaque monkey extrastriate cortex organized? Is vision divisible into separate tasks, such as object recognition and spatial processing, each emphasized in a different anatomical stream? If so, how many streams exist? What are the hierarchical relationships among areas? The present study approached the organization of the extrastriate cortex in a novel manner. A principled relationship exists between cortical function and cortical topography. Similar functions tend to be located near each other, within the constraints of mapping a highly dimensional space of functions onto the two-dimensional space of the cortex. We used this principle to re-examine the functional organization of the extrastriate cortex given current knowledge about its topographic organization. The goal of the study was to obtain a model of the functional relationships among the visual areas, including the number of functional streams into which they are grouped, the pattern of informational overlap among the streams, and the hierarchical relationships among areas. To test each functional description, we mapped it to a model cortex according to the principle of optimal continuity and assessed whether it accurately reconstructed a version of the extrastriate topography. Of the models tested, the one that best reconstructed the topography included four functional streams rather than two, six levels of hierarchy per stream, and a specific pattern of informational overlap among streams and areas. A specific mixture of functions was predicted for each visual area. This description matched findings in the physiological literature, and provided predictions of functional relationships that have yet to be tested physiologically.

Проанализированы компьютерные средства для реализации адаптивной системы поддержки принятия решений; показано, что в качестве основных элементов обслуживания используются контролируемые серверы, в качестве основных инструментов обработки информации - запросы. Сформулирована целевая функция адаптивной системы поддержки принятия решений, направленная на максимизацию количества обрабатываемых в единицу времени запросов при различных меняющихся внешних и внутренних воздействиях. Методика расчета параметров исследуемой системы строится на основе предложенной математической модели. Computer tools are analyzed for implementing an adaptive decision support system; It is shown that controlled servers are used as the main service elements, and requests are used as the main information processing tools. The objective function of the adaptive decision support system is formulated, aimed at maximizing the number of requests processed per unit time under various changing external and internal influences. The methodology for calculating the parameters of the studied system is based on the proposed mathematical model.
