The chemical industry has sustained the development of global economies by providing an astonishing variety of products and services, while also consuming massive amounts of raw materials and energy. Chemical firms are currently under tremendous pressure to become lean enterprises capable of executing not only traditional lean manufacturing practices but also emerging competing strategies of digitalization and sustainability. All of these are core competencies required for chemical firms to compete and thrive in future markets. Unfortunately, reports of successful transformation are so rare among chemical firms that acquiring the details of these cases would seem an almost impossible mission. The severe lack of knowledge about these business transformations thus provided a strong motivation for this research. Using The Open Group Architecture Framework, we performed an in-depth study on a real business transformation occurring at a major international chemical corporation, extracting the architecture framework possibly adopted by this firm to become a lean enterprise. This comprehensive case study resulted in two major contributions to the field of sustainable business transformation: (1) a custom lean enterprise architecture framework applicable to common chemical firms making a similar transformation, and (2) a lean enterprise model developed to assist chemical firms in comprehending the intricate and complicated dynamics between lean manufacturing, digitalization, and sustainability.

In present world scenario, when manufacturing companies encounter capacity problems, they immediately look for increasing overtime, number of shifts and purchase new machine and equipment’s. Instead, focus must be on the better utilization of resources and increasing performance of the existing machines, so that there is better equipment performance, reduction in bottlenecks, decrease overall downtime, improve operator performance and minimization of setup time and other major forms of losses thus enabling in decision on the investment of buying new machines. Thus, the aim of this journal is to study the state of Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) through Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) in Chemical Industry. theoretical framework is developed to determine the predominant TPM pillars that influence the OEE. Based on this theoretical framework, a survey methodology is used where questionnaires are sent to 180 respondents in PT.XYZ with the resulting response rate of 100% which is comparable with other studies. Theoutcome of this survey is analyzed using SPSS and the analysis show that the predominant TPM pillars indeed has a considerable impact on the OEE.

PurposeThe purpose of this paper is to presents a new modeling approach that provides a measurement tool for evaluating the effectiveness of Project Control Systems (PCS) and the improvement of the project control capability as a part of an organization's project management processes.Design/methodology/approachThis study used a project management maturity approach to develop a measurement model of PCS success. The key elements in this model have been identified using the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP) method to analyze data from a case study involving contractor companies in Saudi's petroleum and chemical industry.FindingsThe results identified six critical elements for PCS success: (1) Change Management, (2) Earned Value, (3) Baselined Plan, (4) Resource Loaded, (5) Progress Method and (6) Governance Program. In addition, Project Forecasting and Corrective Action Verification were identified as the main areas where clients and contractors need to focus for the effective deployment of a PCS.Practical implicationsThe results of this study were used to create a PCS Maturity Model (PCSMM) and a PCS Success Index (PCSSI). The value of this index can help project managers to identify the maturity level of their PCS and improvement areas that lead to enhanced project performance.Originality/valueThis research presents an alternative maturity model for PCS assessment that provides a practical tool to identify areas for improving the critical elements of PCS success. The study draws a clear distinction between overall project success and the success of the PCS.
