Experts' opinions exist that the way software is built is primitive. The role of modeling as a treatment for Software Engineering (SE) became more important after the appearance of Model-Driven Architecture (MDA). The main advantage of MDA is architectural separation of concerns that showed the necessity of modeling and opened the way for Software Development (SD) to become engineering. However, this principle does not demonstrate its whole potential power in practice, because of a lack of mathematical accuracy in the initial steps of SD. The question about the sufficiency of modeling in SD is still open. The authors believe that SD, in general, and modeling, in particular, based on mathematical formalism in all its stages together with the implemented principle of architectural separation of concerns can become an important part of SE in its real sense. They introduce such mathematical formalism by means of topological modeling of system functioning.

Some experts opine that software is built in a primitive way. The role of modeling as a treatment for the weakness of software engineering became more important when the principles of Model Driven Architecture (MDA) appeared. Its main advantage is architectural separation of concerns. It showed the necessity of modeling and opened the way for software development to become an engineering discipline. However, this principle does not demonstrate its whole potential power in practice because of lack of mathematical accuracy in the very initial steps of software development. The sufficiency of modeling in software development is still disputable. The authors believe that software development in general (and modeling in particular) based on mathematical formalism in all of its stages and together with the implemented principle of architectural separation of concerns can become an important part of software engineering in its real sense. They propose the formalism by topological modeling of system functioning as the first step towards engineering.

Purpose The three-sector framework (relating to agriculture, manufacturing and services) is one of the major concepts for studying the long-run change of the economic structure. This paper aims to discuss the system-theoretical classification of the structural change in the three-sector framework and, in particular, its predictability by the Poincaré–Bendixson theory. Design/methodology/approach This study compares the assumptions of the Poincaré–Bendixson theory to the typical axioms of structural change modeling, the empirical evidence on the geometrical properties of structural change trajectories and the methodological arguments referring to the laws of structural change. Findings The findings support the assumption that the structural change phenomenon is representable by a dynamical system that is predictable by the Poincaré–Bendixson theory. This result implies, among others, that in the long run, structural change is either transitory or cyclical and can be used in further geometrical/topological long-run structural change modeling and prediction. Originality/value Although widespread in mathematics, geometrical/topological modeling methods have not been used in modeling and prediction of long-run structural change, despite the fact that they seem to be predestined for this purpose owing to their global, system-theoretical nature, allowing for a reduction of ideology content of predictions and greater robustness of results.

The first CNN technology-based, high performance industrial visual computer called Aladdin is reported. The revolutionary device is the world premier of the ACE4k Cellular Visual Microprocessor (CVM) chip powering an industrial visual computer. One of the most important features of the Aladdin system is the image processing library. The library reduces algorithm development time, provides efficient codes, error free operation in binary, and accurate operation in grayscale nodes. Moreover the library provides an easy way to use the Aladdin system for those who are not familiar with the CNN technology.
