The effect of otitis media on emerging language was examined in a group of 1-year-olds. Based on pneumatic otoscopy, 15 babies were considered to be free of otitis media in both ears at 80% or more of their first year medical visits (otitis free) and 12 infants had bilaterally positive otoscopy results at 30% or more of their visits (otitis positive). Outcome measures at 1 year included the Bayley Scales of Infant Development (Bayley, 1969) and the Sequenced Inventory of Communication Development (SICD; Hedrick, Prather, & Tobin, 1984) Receptive and Expressive scales. No significant differences were detected on either the Bayley or the SICD Receptive scale. However, the otitis positive group exhibited significantly lower expressive language scores than the otitis free group, suggesting that impairments in language expression may be evident as early as 1 year of age in children with otitis media.

Employers often consider graduates to be unprepared for employment and lacking in vocational skills. A common demand from them is that the curriculum should include ‘communication skills’, as specific skills in their own right and also because of the central role that such skills can play in developing other desirable attributes. Current thinking in communication has indicated a split between communication apprehension and communication development. There are indications that techniques designed to develop communication skills will not resolve communication apprehension and that, if an individual has a high level of communication apprehension, these techniques will not result in improved communication performance. This paper compares and contrasts the levels and profiles of communication apprehension exhibited by accounting and engineering students. The implications of the findings are then discussed and the need for further research in the area of vocational choice is identified.

Objective To survey speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding their involvement in treating infants whose mothers experience postpartum depression. Method SIG 1 members were invited to participate in an 8-question survey examining their involvement with infant-mother pairs, including mothers diagnosed with postpartum depression (PPD). Results Results indicate that, while some SLPs frequently work with infant-mother pairs, few have knowledge regarding the diagnosis of PPD in the mothers. Conclusions It is likely that many SLPs are working with infant-mother pairs that include mothers who are experiencing PPD. Suggestions regarding the role of the SLP are offered, including providing support for these mothers in terms of obtaining services and helping these mothers use appropriate infant-directed speech to facilitate communication and cognitive development in their infants.
