This paper focused on the structure of the growth stories, especially in surveying Gangbaek Lee’s (이강백) drama “Like Looking at the Flower in the Mid-winter (동지섣달 꽃 본 듯이)”. It is structured by ‘rule of the three’. In this text, three sons go to seek their mother, they experience the tests three times. Third son wins the game because he succeeds to find his true and alternative mother. It is similar to the story of English fairy tale “Three Little Pigs”.  In Freudian terms, the characters of the both texts are superego, ego and id. The core of the growth story is that third son (id) wins the first son (superego) and the second son (ego) by using his own energy (meaningful labor). In Levi Strauss’ terms, the contrast between the third and the others can be schemed the contrast between culture and nature. Lee’s drama presents the third son as the real hero who overcomes two elder brothers. The first is so conservative (oversleep), the second is so selfish (overeat). Two brothers were too political or too ideal to become a true, humanistic and warm-minded adult. In his view, ‘drama’ related to the third son is the most humanistic and warm-minded action in the world. These both stories are based on the plot ‘rags to riches’ which contains the success of the poor and powerless. In other words, the poor and weak child can grow to the true hero, and reach the final destination, according to the Gustav Jung’s expression, ‘the Self as a Whole’.

In this Letter, we adapt a recently reported Pd-catalyzed transannular C(sp3)–H arylation of alicyclic amines for applications in fragment-based drug discovery (FBDD). We apply this method to the synthesis of a series of 6-arylated 3-azabicyclo[3.1.0]hexanes that are rule-of-three compliant fragments. Several modifications were made to the Pd-catalyzed C–H arylation method to enhance its utility in fragment synthesis. These include the use of microwave heating to shorten reaction times to under 1 h and the development of new approaches for directing group cleavage. Finally, we demonstrate that this fragment library falls within desirable physicochemical space for FBDD applications.

Good morning and thank you for coming to listen to my Presidential Address. You have been listening to Meat Loaf’s Bat out of Hell and for those of you who are used to seeing me in various costumes I apologise for not appearing as Batman on a Batbike, but I know my limits (like .The illustration on the front cover of the Gazette is a bit of a turkey. It comes from an old mathematics exercise book by Henry Smith who started it in 1843 and appears just before he does some examples on the single rule of three direct in vulgar fractions. I wonder how long it took him to do it, but there has surely been some implicit mathematics done in managing to get the wording arranged fairly equally around a circle! The rest of the exercise book is very neatly presented and illustrated, though without any indication that the work has been marked in a summative or formative way. Hence it would not meet today’s standards.
