O desenvolvimento de software é uma atividade intensive em esforço humano. Assim, a forma como os desenvolvedores encaram suas tarefas é de suam importância. Em um ambiente como o usual em projetos de FOSS (free/open source software) em que profissionais (desenvolvedores pagos) compartilham os esforços de desenvolvimento com voluntários, a moral da comunidade de desenvolvedores e usuários é fundamental. Neste artigo, apresentamos uma análise preliminary utilizando técnicas de análise de sentimentos realizada em um projeto de FOSS. Para isso, executamos a mineração da lista de endereços eletrônicos de um projeto e aplicamos as técnicas propostas aos participantes mais relevantes. Embora a aplicação seja limitada, no momento atual, experamos que essa experiência possa ser benéfica no future para determiner situações que possam afetar os desenvolvedores ou o projeto, tais como baixa produtividade, abandono do projeto ou bifurcação do projeto, entre outras.

Drawing on social network theories and previous studies, this research examines the dynamics of social network structures in open source software (OSS) teams. Three projects were selected from SourceForge.net in terms of their similarities as well as their differences. Monthly data were extracted from the bug tracking systems in order to achieve a longitudinal view of the interaction pattern of each project. Social network analysis was used to generate the indices of social structure. The finding suggests that the interaction pattern of OSS projects evolves from a single hub at the beginning to a core/periphery model as the projects move forward.

Open source software (OSS) has gained considerable attention recently in healthcare. Yet, how and why OSS is being adopted within hospitals in particular remains a poorly understood issue. This research attempts to further this understanding. A mixed-method research approach was used to explore the extent of OSS adoption in hospitals as well as the factors facilitating and inhibiting adoption. The findings suggest a very limited adoption of OSS in hospitals. Hospitals tend to adopt general-purpose instead of domain-specific OSS. We found that software vendors are the critical factor facilitating the adoption of OSS in hospitals. Conversely, lack of in-house development as well as a perceived lack of security, quality, and accountability of OSS products were factors inhibiting adoption. An empirical model is presented to illustrate the factors facilitating and inhibiting the adoption of OSS in hospitals.

A software development paradigm for open source software (OSS) project has been rapidly spread in recent years. On the other hand, an effective method of quality management has not been established due to the unique development characteristics such as no testing phase. In this paper, we assume that the number of fault-detections observed on the bug tracking system tends to infinity, and discuss a method of statistical process control (SPC) for OSS projects by applying the logarithmic Poisson execution time model as a software reliability growth model (SRGM) based on a nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). Then, we propose a control chart method based on the logarithmic Poisson execution time model for judging the statical stability state, and estimating the additional development time for attaining the objective software failure intensity, i.e., the target value of the instantaneous fault-detection rate per unit time. We also discuss an optimal software release problem for determining the optimum time when to stop OSS development and to transfer it to user operation. Further, numerical illustrations for SPC are shown by applying the actual fault-count data observed on the bug tracking system.

User satisfaction has always been important for software success whether it is Open Source Software (OSS) or closed proprietary software. Even though we do not presume that OSS always has poor usability, as there are examples of good usable open source software, it would still be agreed that OSS usability has room for further improvement. This paper presents an empirical investigation to study the impact of some key factors on OSS usability from developers' points of view. This is one of the series of four studies that we are conducting regarding improvement of OSS usability from OSS developers, users, contributors, and industry perspectives. The research model of this empirical investigation studies and establishes the relationship between the key usability factors from developers' perspective and OSS usability. A data set of 106 OSS developers from 18 open source projects of varied size has been used to study the research model. The results of this study provide empirical evidence that the studied key factors play a significant role in improving OSS usability.
