The author of the thesis: MBA, MProf Natalija Kostrikova. The title of the thesis: Opportunities for blockchain technology adoption in the economy of Latvia in the context of Baltic States region. The hypothesis of the thesis: It is possible to facilitate digitalisation of the economy of Latvia through blockchain technology adoption. The aim of the thesis: to develop recommendations for facilitating blockchain technology adoption in the economy of Latvia based on investigation of global blockchain technology adoption factors and scenarios with a focus on Baltic States region analysis. To achieve the aim, the following tasks are set: 1. to outline a framework for blockchain technology adoption assessment through the lenses of innovation theories, technology adoption models and the concept of knowledge economy; 2. to analyse blockchain related policies, public opinions and regulatory developments in the European Union and Baltic States; 3. to analyse blockchain technology adoption trends worldwide and in the Baltic States; 4. to develop and analyse scenarios for blockchain technology adoption in the economy of Latvia. To achieve the aim of the thesis, the research is structured in four chapters with sub–sections. The first chapter outlines the theoretical research of blockchain technology, knowledge economy, innovation theories and aspects of innovation diffusion process and underlying innovation adoption factors. As a result, innovation adoption and technology acceptance models are summarized. The second chapter studies blockchain related policies and regulatory developments – blockchain technology innovation planning documents and relevant regulatory enactments of the European Union and Latvia. In the third chapter, blockchain technology innovation and adoption worldwide and in Baltic States is analysed in various areas of applications and geographical tendencies and success factors are investigated. In the fourth chapter, blockchain technology adoption factors and scenarios are determined based on international experience and international expert survey involving 82 respondents from 30 countries; blockchain adoption factors and scenarios in the economy of Latvia are assessed through AHP analysis based on expert opinions of seven renowned national experts; and recommendations for facilitating blockchain technology adoption in Latvia are developed. As a result of the thesis, a blockchain technology adoption assessment matrix and recommendations for facilitating blockchain technology adoption in the economy of Latvia have been developed with the aim of strengthening the global competitiveness of the economy of Latvia. At the end of the thesis the main conclusions, research results and recommendations for facilitating blockchain technology adoption in the economy of Latvia are formulated. The volume of the thesis for acquiring the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Economics and Business (Ph.D.) is 184 pages. The work contains 15 tables, 50 figures, 12 appendices, 323 information sources.

Purpose This paper aims to explore patterns of business financing and adoption of blockchain technology in the agricultural industry. The adoption of blockchain technology in terms of recording, storing, validating and securing data can solve a variety of agricultural problems such as agricultural business financing. If the banking and insurance industries are connected in real-time to activity data in the agricultural industry, they can create better credit ratings and profile models. So, finally, all parties in the agricultural industry have a greater chance to get business financing from banks. Design/methodology/approach This paper uses a case study research approach with a framework of analysis of the theory of adoption of technology, organization and environment (TOE) and the theory of “mindfulness of adoption”. The case study method has advantages when verification is still questioned or the application of certain theories in practice as phenomena and contexts that occur in the field in accordance with the application of blockchain technology into a relatively new business, both technically and practically in the field. Findings The findings indicate that there are no barriers to the availability of blockchain technology for technology adoption. The characteristics of this technology are very suitable for solving financing and supply chain business problems in the agricultural industry. However, the adoption of blockchain technology in agriculture shows that there is complexity in the organizational context involving internal and external organizations. The number of organizations and small parties involved in the agricultural process challenges the adoption of blockchain technology as new technology. Then, the external environment of technology, especially government regulations in developing countries, is still an obstacle to the adoption of blockchain technology. Research limitations/implications This study faces several limitations, namely, the limited case of implementation of the blockchain technology due to the novelty of technology and government regulation. So that further research related to the adoption of blockchain technology needs to be done using field data such as surveys. Research related to the connectivity of the banking industry and other financial institutions also needs to be explored further, especially in creating a data-based credit risk model of the blockchain system. Originality/value On the practical side, case studies of technology adoption and its relationship with the financing of agricultural business are still little explored so this study contributes to exploring the application of blockchain technology in the agricultural industry. The adoption of blockchain technology has an impact not only on farmers but also on all parties involved in the supply chain including banks, insurance and other financial institutions. In addition, the distributed data exchange business model using blockchain technology is a new business model in the agriculture industry.

The rise of connected world is a reality through Internet of Things (IoT) technology and is increasingly changing the way people live, communicate and work. Perhaps, for a continued support to be delivered efficiently and effectively in terms of the services IoT offers, there are some challenges which need attention. This is basically the security aspects pertaining to the data the IoT devices generate, collect and process. In the recent years, blockchain technology gained attention in cutting edge solutions based on securing IoT devices. However, it is observed that adoption of blockchain technology is limited in several countries. The proposed research aims to investigate potential barriers to adopting blockchain technology in smart city applications through a qualitative study. In addition, a stake algorithm to demonstrate the security aspect in IoT device is presented.

The purpose of this paper is to examine the adoption process of emerging technology on the example of blockchain. The theoretical interpretation of blockchain acceptance and its implications are discussed from the positions of technology adoption theories (diffusion of innovation theory, the technology acceptance model, the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology, the technology – organisation – environment framework) as well as sensemaking theory. These theoretical models help understand the perception among end-users (e.g. supply chain practitioners) and facilitate technology diffusion among enterprises. Due to the novelty of the research field, the analysis revealed that current studies were conducted within the functionalist paradigm; however, studies on blockchain implementation can be equally done in the interpretive paradigm. The results indicate a shortage of empirical research investigations and the need for greater theory elaboration to accelerate the adoption process within organisations.
