This paper deals with concise study on clustering: existing methods and developments made at various times. Clustering is defined as an unsupervised learning where the targets are sorted out on the foundation of some similarity inherent among them. In the recent times, we dispense with large masses of data including images, video, social text, DNA, gene information, etc. Data clustering analysis has come out as an efficient technique to accurately achieve the task of categorizing information into sensible groups. Clustering has a deep association with researches in several scientific fields. k-means algorithm was suggested in 1957. K-mean is the most popular partitional clustering method till date. In many commercial and non-commercial fields, clustering techniques are used. The applications of clustering in some areas like image segmentation, object and role recognition and data mining are highlighted. In this paper, we have presented a brief description of the surviving types of clustering approaches followed by a survey of the areas.

Abstract Several image segmentation techniques have been developed over the years to analyze the characteristics of images. Among these, the uncertainty based approaches and their hybrids have been found to be more efficient than the conventional and individual ones. Very recently, a hybrid clustering algorithm, called Rough Intuitionistic Fuzzy C-Means (RIFCM) was proposed by the authors and proved to be more efficient than the conventional and other algorithms applied in this direction, using various datasets. Besides, in order to remove noise from the images, a Refined Bit Plane (RBP) algorithm was introduced by us. In this paper we use a combination of the RBP and RIFCM to propose an approach and apply it to leukemia images. The aim of the paper is twofold. First, it establishes the superiority of our approach in medical diagnosis in comparison to most of the conventional, as well as uncertainty based approaches. The other objective is to provide a computer-aided diagnosis system that will assist the doctors in evaluating medical images in general, and also in easy and better assessment of the disease in leukaemia patients. We have applied several measures like DB-index, D-index, RMSE, PSNR, time estimation in depth computation and histogram analysis to support our conclusions.

This paper proposes a new improved mountain clustering technique, which is compared with some of the existing techniques such as K-Means, FCM, EM and Modified Mountain Clustering. The performance of all these clustering techniques towards color image segmentation is compared in terms of cluster entropy as a measure of information and observed via computational complexity. The cluster entropy is heuristically determined, but is found to be effective in forming correct clusters as verified by visual assessment.

Image segmentation is gauged as an essential stage of representation in image processing. This process segregates a digitized image into various categorized sections. An additional advantage of distinguishing dissimilar objects can be represented within this state of the art. Numerous image segmentation techniques have been proposed by various researchers, which maintained a smooth and easy timely evaluation. In this chapter, an introduction to image processing along with segmentation techniques, computer vision fundamentals, and its applied applications that will be of worth to the image processing and computer vision research communities has been deeply studied. It aims to interpret the role of various clustering-based image segmentation techniques specifically. Use of the proposed chapter if made in real time can project better outcomes in object detection and recognition, which can then later be applied in numerous applications and devices like in robots, automation, medical equipment, etc. for safety, advancement, and betterment of society.
