Between the years 1200 and 1600, vast quantities of sand were brought inshore from offshore bars as a result of centuries of ferocious storms, to form a series of dune systems along the South Wales coastline. Today, as a result of many housing, leisure, and industrial developments only a few remnants exist. On one such remnant at Porthcawl, Wales, UK, became a caravan site in the 1930s, which was abandoned in 1993 for political reasons. Within 27 years a minimum of 120,000 m3 of sand was transported from the adjacent beach and formed dunes >4 m in height along a 400- m frontal edge that extended some 130 m inland, approximately a third of the site. Typical vegetation found along the frontal part of the system are Ammophila arenaria (marram), Agropyron junceiforme (sand couch grass) and Euphorbia maritimum (spurge). To the rear of the system, vegetation included Agrostis tenuis and stolonifera, (bent and creeping bent grass), Cirsium avense (creeping thistle), and Caluna vulgaris (heather). A 4-m-high and c. 3000m2 area of a vigorous stand of Hippophae rhamnoides (sea buckthorn) has also formed. The rapidity of dune formation and vegetation colonization is staggering.

Visual fields and ommatidial angles of the compound eyes of Mantispa styriaca were determined using luminous pseudopupil and histological-anatomical techniques. The maximal horizontal overlap averaged 42.7° in femalesand 52.4° in males; females had only one overlap maximum, whereas males had two. In the dorsoventral direction, the binocular field had an overlap of 135.2° in the female and 142° in the male. In light-adapted eyes, optical acceptance angles reached values of 2.0°, and they reached 3.6° with dark adaptation; interommatidial angles were between 1.8° and 2.3°. The angles were very similar over the entire eye; no acute zone was found in the frontal part of the eye, as the large binocular overlap would suggest. The results are compared with those for the praying mantis: this animal is in no way related to Mantispa but resembles it in appearance and capture behaviour.

AbstractThe aim of this article is to show the results of the lichenometrical and Schmidt hammer measurements performed in 2015 during the AMADEE-15 Mars Mission Simulation in the Ötztal Alps in order to test the capabilities of analogue astronauts and collect information on the geomorphic history of the study area since the Little Ice Age (LIA). The results obtained differ significantly from our expectations, which we attribute to differences in the field experience of participants and the astronauts’ technical limitations in terms of mobility. However, the experiments proved that these methods are within the range of the astronauts’ capabilities. Environmental factors, such as i) varied petrography, ii) varied number of thalli in test polygons, and iii) differences in topoclimatic conditions between the LIA moraine and the glacier front, further inhibited simple interpretation. The LIA maximum of the Kaunertal glacier occurred in AD 1850, and relative stabilization of the frontal part of the rock glacier occurred in AD 1711.

This paper presents a simple and accurate coordinate transformation method for extending the tracking space of the Intersense IS-900 spatial and motion tracking system using multiple pre-configured emitter towers to form the emitter constellation, but without resorting to the use of a surveyor machine. The proposed approach uses the differences of positional coordinate readings from each emitter tower among a set of commonly viewed spatial points to calculate the parameters needed to define the coordinate transformation. By applying this method, the tracking accuracy using the entire emitter constellation can be achieved by less than 0.5 inches error in most of the working space, and as low as 0.2 inches error in the frontal part of the working space.

SummaryThe cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) circulation was studied with isotope cisternography in 30 patients with a schizophrenic type of psychosis. All had previously received neuroleptic treatment. Disturbed CSF circulation was found in 10 cases. In four of these, persistent intraventricular radioactivity was observed as well as partly obstructed CSF spaces. In the other six cases a slow CSF circulation was noted as well as evidence of partly obstructed CSF spaces especially of the upper posterior frontal region. Signs of atrophy of the cortex and vermis were found on CT scan in 10 cases. In four of these subjects a local atrophy was noticed in the upper posterior frontal cortex and around the frontal part of the interhemispheric fissure. Seventeen of the patients (57 per cent) had pathological findings at isotope cisternography and/or at CT. Disturbed circulation did not correlate with CT-findings, age, duration of psychosis, alcohol abuse, drug consumption or family history for psychosis. CT evidence of brain atrophy was significantly related to nonfamilial type of psychosis.
