Der deutsche Arzt Ferdinand Sauerbruch gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Chirurgen des 20. Jahrhunderts. Ob die von ihm entwickelte Handprothese für amputierte Soldaten des Ersten Weltkrieges oder sein Verfahren, das Operationen am offenen Brustkorb ermöglichte: Aus wissenschaftlicher Sicht hat er Meilensteine gesetzt. Doch menschlich und politisch zählt der Chirurg zu den umstrittensten Ärzten der Zeitgeschichte. Patienten schätzten seine ausgeprägte empathische Ader, Kollegen fühlten sich von ihm bevormundet und diskriminiert. Wer sich nicht auf seiner vorgegebenen chirurgischen Linie bewegte, konnte schnell ausgegrenzt oder beschimpft werden. Sauerbruch war zweifelsohne ein Mann der Widersprüche. Besonders deutlich wurde seine extreme und wechselhafte Persönlichkeit unter der Herrschaft der Nationalsozialisten. 1937 nannte er Adolf Hitler „den verrücktesten Kriminellen der Geschichte“, ließ sich aber im selben Jahr von ihm persönlich mit dem Deutschen Nationalpreis für Kunst und Wissenschaft auszeichnen. 1943 verurteilte er das Euthanasie- Programm der Nationalsozialisten, ließ sich aber als Generalarzt der Wehrmacht und Fachspartenleiter der Deutschen Forschergemeinschaft für sie einspannen.

Entre tous les acteurs de la république de Weimar et du régime nazi c'est — après Adolf Hitler — l'armée qui a suscité le plus d'intérêt. Journalistes et érudits, civils et militaires, avocats et procureurs s'accordent à lui donner un premier rôle dans la vie politique, en dépit ou à cause de son apolitisme. Dès 1938, J. Benoist-Méchin la montrait assurant la pérennité de l'Allemagne entre la grandeur de l'Empire et le « renouveau » national-socialiste; sympathique aux militaires et, plus qu'il ne l'avouait, au IIIe Reich, il en comprenait mieux les affinités que les oppositions. Puis les peuples victimes de la guerre eurent assez naturellement tendance à confondre l'uniforme gris-vert et l'uniforme brun ou noir. Encore que le tribunal de Nuremberg n'ait condamné ni l'armée allemande ni même le grand État-Major comme organisations criminelles, tous ceux qui, peu après 1945, se penchaient sur les origines de la guerre expliquaient celle-ci par la conjonction d'une tyrannie moderne avec un militarisme invétéré ; dans cette perspective, les complots militaires contre Hitler, dont on ne pouvait nier la réalité, n'apparaissaient que comme des épisodes, émouvants certes, mais voués à l'échec.

This book explores the curious relationship between Albatross Press—a British-funded publisher of English-language books with Jewish ties—and the Third Reich of Adolf Hitler. Albatross began printing its books in Germany in May 1932, barely a year before Hitler came to power. It made its name not in the trade of mild classics but in edgy, modern British and American books. From its titles to its packaging, Albatross projected a cosmopolitan ethos at odds with German nationalism. This book tells the story of survival against the odds, of what happened when a resolutely cosmopolitan, multinational publishing house became entwined with the most destructively nationalistic culture of modern times. It asks how Albatross was allowed to print and sell its books within the nationalistic climate of Nazi Germany, became the largest purveyor of English-language paperbacks in 1930s Europe and then vanished with so little trace.

This article deals with a little known episode that occurred near the end of the Great War in a military reserve hospital located in the small town of Pasewalk, part of the distant region of Pomerania in northern Poland. The story is centered around the transient visual loss of a 29-year-old Austrian messenger of the 16th Bavarian Infantry Regiment. His name: Adolf Hitler.
