Abstract São Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, is also home to one of the largest Chinese populations in Latin America, with only Lima being indubitably larger. This paper briefly describes the history and present situation of the Chinese community in São Paulo, with a focus on the contemporary mainland Chinese who make up the majority. The fieldwork for this research was conducted in the months of March to June 2011, and the findings are based on the accounts provided by Brazilian, Chinese and Sino-Brazilian respondents supplemented by the existing Brazilian, Chinese and international scholarship on the subject, as well as Brazilian and Chinese press reports and internet publications. Names have been changed to protect the privacy of the respondents.

In this work we take a look at a small southern country in Latin America: Uruguay, located between two large neighbors: Argentina and Brazil. In the paper some socio-economic features and historical facts about Uruguay were presented. Historically, the agricultural sector and export specialisation have been quite important for the country’s economic growth. Recently, services have become important too. The second part of the paper is entirely dedicated to the present situation, namely from March 2019, in which it was described how the COVID-19 pandemic has been dealt with in terms of the health and economic measures. Finally, some questions about the future of the pandemic and the country’s economy were posed.
