The aim of this study is to assess the capability of estimating Leaf Area Index (LAI) from high spatial resolution multi-angular Vis-NIR remote sensing data of WiDAS (Wide-Angle Infrared Dual-mode Line/Area Array Scanner) imaging system by inverting the coupled radiative transfer models PROSPECT-SAILH. Based on simulations from SAILH canopy reflectance model and PROSPECT leaf optical properties model, a Look-up Table (LUT) which describes the relationship between multi-angular canopy reflectance and LAI has been produced. Then the LAI can be retrieved from LUT by directly matching canopy reflectance of six view directions and four spectral bands with LAI. The inversion results are validated by field data, and by comparing the retrieval results of single-angular remote sensing data with multi-angular remote sensing data, we can found that the view angle takes the obvious impact on the LAI retrieval of single-angular data and that high accurate LAI can be obtained from the high resolution multi-angular remote sensing technology.

SUMMARYHand-planted plots of across-row-oriented corn seeds (Zeamays L.) produce highly structured leaf canopies and have shown significant yield advantage over randomly planted plots in prior studies. For further investigation of the phenomenon by simulation, the objective of this study was to develop a probabilistic model for the correlation between seed orientation and initial plant orientation. In greenhouse trials, the azimuthal orientation of kernels of four different hybrids was recorded at planting. At collar setting of the seed leaf, the orientation of the seed leaf was determined and the angular data subjected to the analytical methods of circular statistics. The results indicate that the correlation between seed azimuth and seed leaf azimuth can be described by a von Mises distribution. The probabilistic seed to seed leaf azimuth model described herein may be implemented in simulation models to investigate the effect of canopy architecture, canopy closure and light interception efficiency of corn under conditions of seed oriented planting.

AbstractThe Nimbus-6 satellite carries the Scanning Microwave Spectrometer experiment (SCAMS) which continuously maps the Earth’s surface at two frequencies (22.235 and 31.65 GHz) and at six angles besides nadir. Cluster analysis was applied to these observations to determine the influence of various geophysical parameters on the radiometric brightness temperatures.Characteristic microwave signatures for a variety of terrain were obtained by this method; discrete clusters were distinguished for sea ice (with sub-classes for ice age and fractional ice cover) and firn (with accumulation-rate sub-classes). The availability of the angular data greatly facilitated separate determinations of the extent of continuous sea ice and mixtures of sea ice and water.
