Resource sharing problem is one of the most important aspects of Cloud architectures whose primary goal is to fully enable the concept of accessing computing resources on-demand. Access control and resource federation are hot research topics and a lot of open issues should be addressed on functionalities, technological interoperability, quality of services and security of the federated infrastructures. This chapter aims at offering a view on the problems of access control on federated Clouds; since they strongly depend on chosen architectures and platforms, the chapter will discuss some solutions applied on a real case study: the PerfCloud framework, which is based on the integration of Grid and Cloud platforms. The proposed architecture is based on the adoption of an interoperability system to cope with identity federation and access control, it is strictly related to the adopted framework nevertheless it helps the reader to have an idea of the involved open issues and available solutions in commercial or experimental clouds.

The last two decades have seen the spread of LMS among schools, universities, and companies to augment the traditional teaching process with ICT and network technologies. This chapter presents the process leading to the adoption of a Moodle based LMS at the University of Genova in the last decade. By analyzing the data collected from the LMS logs and from questionnaires proposed both to students and teachers, we found out that the needs of the stakeholders are largely limited to resource sharing and organizational support, satisfactorily provided by the current service. Further improvements could be achieved by the introduction of a policy encouraging or forcing the teachers to use the provided LMS. A project on instructional design and, as a case study, the evolution of some of the courses involved in it are also presented. Though the redesign of such courses has improved their results, the impact on the overall organization of the degree program has been negative. We infer that this is due to the excessive freedom the students enjoy in taking their exams in Italy.

Eco-industrial parks (EIP) are a community of manufacturing businesses which seek better environmental and economic performance by using the principles of Industrial Ecology (IE). In Taiwan, government-designated EIPs have operated since 1995, with 23 industrial parks currently in operation. This study presents a case from Taiwan, the Linhai Industrial park, and analyzes the park’s transition towards industrial symbiosis and resource sharing. Resource sharing modifications resulted in reduced carbon emissions, millions of liters of fuel saved, and thousands of tons of industrial waste recycled. This successful transition was possible because of coordinated government support. Key factors include technological subsidies, policy support, and willing manufacturers. Additional explanations for Linhai’s current success are explored and future areas of research are identified.

This chapter describes one university-based social network created for peer mentoring, knowledge brokering, and resource sharing for faculty and students to collaborate to increase research and scholarship. First, the case study describes the process utilized to survey interests of faculty as the basis for an affiliation network of faculty research interests. The benefits of social network analysis and its applications are discussed and utilized. Next, a conversation is presented about the use of social network analysis to foster faculty collaboration through targeted programming. Finally, recommendations for practice are presented.

This paper aims to empirically identify the key factors that drive effective innovative business models in the creative industries. There have been various approaches of analyzing the impact and importance of the creative industries but few appears to address the importance of major stakeholders driving innovation potential in this arena. A case study of the Moon Lantern Festival event held in Adelaide South Australia, where it is part of the OzAsia Festival has been adopted in this paper to underline the analyses of this study. Using a systems approach and stakeholder theory this research aims to develop a model that evaluates innovative business practices in major public Performing Arts Festivals. From the case study and its stakeholder analysis a new business model framework is proposed with a focus on organisational culture, idea generation, relationships and collaborations, team work and resource sharing.
