✓ This study was undertaken to evaluate the histological reaction of cultured endothelial cells to endovascular embolic materials in vitro. Endothelial cells were isolated and cultured from a canine carotid artery. Embolic materials (platinum microcoils, polyvinyl alcohol particles, silicon balloons, or silk threads), either in their normal state or after having been coated with type 1 collagen, fibronectin, or laminin, were placed on endothelial cells and cocultured for 6, 12, and 24 hours and 2, 3, 7, 14, and 21 days. The cocultures were investigated histologically using a scanning electron microscope. Endothelial cells were not found on any uncoated embolic materials, even at 21 days. On the materials coated with fibronectin or laminin, endothelial cells began to proliferate in 7 days, covering the materials extensively in 14 days. On the other hand, endothelial cells began to proliferate on the collagen-coated materials in 3 days, covering them extensively in 7 days and reaching confluence with a cobblestone pattern in 21 days. The densities of endothelial cells on collagen-coated materials were much higher than those observed on the materials coated with other extracellular matrices. Future advantages of the clinical use of collagen-coated embolic materials in interventional treatment are discussed.

Purpose The goal of this clinical focus article is to illustrate how speech-language pathologists can document the functional language of school-age children using language sample analysis (LSA). Advances in computer hardware and software are detailed making LSA more accessible for clinical use. Method This clinical focus article illustrates how documenting school-age student's communicative functioning is central to comprehensive assessment and how using LSA can meet multiple needs within this assessment. LSA can document students' meaningful participation in their daily life through assessment of their language used during everyday tasks. The many advances in computerized LSA are detailed with a primary focus on the Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts (Miller & Iglesias, 2019). The LSA process is reviewed detailing the steps necessary for computers to calculate word, morpheme, utterance, and discourse features of functional language. Conclusion These advances in computer technology and software development have made LSA clinically feasible through standardized elicitation and transcription methods that improve accuracy and repeatability. In addition to improved accuracy, validity, and reliability of LSA, databases of typical speakers to document status and automated report writing more than justify the time required. Abstract The syndrome of unilateral neglect, typified by a lateralized attention bias and neglect of contralateral space, is an important cause of morbidity and disability after a stroke. In this review, we discuss the challenges that face researchers attempting to elucidate the mechanisms and effectiveness of rehabilitation treatments. The neglect syndrome is a heterogeneous disorder, and it is not clear which of its symptoms cause ongoing disability. We review current methods of neglect assessment and propose logical approaches to selecting treatments, while acknowledging that further study is still needed before some of these approaches can be translated into routine clinical use. We conclude with systems-level suggestions for hypothesis development that would hopefully form a sound theoretical basis for future approaches to the assessment and treatment of neglect.

In diabetic foot disease, critical limb ischaemia (CLI) cannot be precisely described using established definitions. For clinical use, the Fontaine classification complemented with any objective verification of a reduced arterial circulation is sufficient for decision making. For scientific purposes, objective measurement criteria should be reported. Assessment of CLI should rely on the physical examination of the limb arteries, complemented by laboratory tests like the shape of the PVR curve at ankle or toe levels, and arteriography. The prognosis of CLI in diabetic foot disease depends on the success of arterial reconstruction. The best prognosis for the patients is with a preserved limb. Reconstructive surgery is the best choice for the majority of patients.
