A pot experiment was conducted to study the effects of arsenic (As) and sulfur (S) interaction on yield and their accumulation and distribution in rapeseed (Brassica napus L.). The results showed that (1) at the same level of S treatment, application of As significantly decreased rapeseed grain and biomass yield; (2) Application of S significantly increased the grain and biomass yield of rapeseed when As was applied; (3) When As application rate increased, As content significantly increased in different parts of rapeseed, and reached their highest level at<br />120 mg/kg As. Arsenic content from seed were all below 1 mg/kg AS. Addition of S significantly reduced As contents in root and grain of rapeseed.

Chemical stabilization of metals is lately considered as a possible pretreatment for soilcontaminated with average levels of trace elements. The element mobility in soil can bealtered by adding soil amendments that can adsorb, complex, or co-precipitate trace elements.As a consequence, pollutant spreading from the contaminated soil and effect on the recipientcan be reduced. The different contaminants originating from wood impregnation chemicals,e.g. Cu, Cr, and As limit the choice of amendments because e.g. large pH fluctuations andconsequent mobilization of Cu or As should be avoided. The results show that the leaching ofarsenic is lowest in the lysimeter with 15% Fe3O4. In both lysimeters with untreated soil andwith 1 % Fe 0, the arsenic leaching seems to decrease with the sampling depth. The leaching ofcopper is generally low. Further the addition of iron seems to increase the leaching ofmanganese and nickel but to reduce the leaching of zinc. Results from the laboratoryexperiment show that the arsenic content in the leachate is lowest with the highest mixture ofmagnetite. Mixing is one of the key issues when discussing the treatment efficiency andpossible use of the treated soil. The results so far indicate that magnetite can be used fortreatment of CCA contaminated soil also at a large scale. Reduction of both arsenic andcopper using a single amendment is challenging as they behave opposite. Magnetite seems tobe a promising amendment even though a high amount of amendment needs to be added.Moreover, the potential establishment of reducing conditions at larger depths in the soil is ofconcern since this might lead to a rapid increase in arsenic leaching

In order to phytoremediation the soils contaminated by arsenical chemical weapons abandoned by Japan at some region of Jilin Province and ready for the estimate of the ecological safety, this paper analyzed organic species in soil with GC-MS, disscussed extraction and testing of inorganic arsenic in soil with hydrochloric acid, studied species of arsenic in soil such as available forms, valence state, and combined state, and inferred conversion process of arsenical chemical agent. The results indicate that after simple destroying and long time burial, almost all arsenical chemical agents in soil at this region are converted into inorganic arsenic due to explosion, burning, natural oxidation and microorganism, which primarily exists as As (V). Organic arsenic was only detected at where shells were buried (destroyed), in leaded shells and contaminated soil, with its content 3.65%~32.03%; Organic arsenic content of soil in other part is less than 10%. In contaminated soil of this region, water soluble arsenic and available arsenic extracted from disodium hydrogen phosphate take 0.81~2.58% and 7.49~15.96% of total arsenic respectively. Exchangeable As and binding As (Al-As, Fe-As, reducible As and Ca-As) take 40% of total arsenic, residual As takes 49.38~66.43%. The results may be used as basis for determining remedy methods and assessing ecological safety at this region.

The effect of diatomite and tripoli added into the soil artificially contaminated with benzo[a]pyrene was studied. A decrease in the toxic effect of BaP on barley plants was established when diatomite and tripoli were added as ameliorants to contaminated soil. The improvement of plants grown сharacteristics on soils contaminated with BaP with the addition of diatomite and tripoli was shown up to 2-4 times compare to contaminated samples.

As a result of the model experiment, an increase in the enzymatic activity of meadow chernozem of the impact zone of Ataman Lake with the introduction of a strains mixture of metal-resistant microorganisms into the soil was established. The experiment has shown that the application of bacterial strains increases the dehydrogenase activity of contaminated soil by 51.8% compared to the variant without remediation
