Background: Selenium is a micronutrient, although required in low amounts, its importance in male and female reproduction is well known. Objectives: The core purpose of this study is to evaluate the role of selenium in human reproduction, during pregnancy/ lactation in women and newborns. The review explains side by side the sources of selenium, required amounts of selenium in humans and during pregnancy or lactation. Methods: Selenium deficiency is a major cause of male infertility. Similarly, selenium deficiency, both in pregnant and postpartum women, would greatly affect the health of the newborn baby in all respects. The effect of maternal selenium upon the fetus and the neonates even one year after birth has been explained with some recent examples. Results: The study elaborates the fact that the selenium deficiency in pregnancy and lactation is common due to fetal/infant development, so selenium supplements must be provided in order to overcome these deficiency symptoms. Conclusions: The better reproductive health in humans is possible due to the sufficient amounts of selenium present both in males and females as well.

The aim of this chapter is to demonstrate the importance and necessity of bringing together the considerations of language and reproduction. While other topics of sexuality have aroused interest in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology, the ideas, practices, and experiences of human reproduction, notably pregnancy, remain understudied. At the same time, a discussion of language has been largely absent from the anthropology of reproduction, which has emerged in the last twenty years as an especially vibrant area of cultural and social study. The chapter examines the metaphors and discourses or the “talk about” reproduction; the interactions and “talk between” people, like pregnant women and medical health care providers, which shapes the ordinary experiences of reproduction; the “talk to” parties (specifically, fetuses and imagined children) who themselves become constituted through talk; and reproduction as literacy event or one that is mediated and experienced in relation to texts. It is asserted that language is a practice of reproduction.

Abstract Objective To illustrate the importance of treatment duration with intramuscular testosterone undecanoate (Nebido®) for the final spermatogenesis recovery after treatment cessation. Also, to show a subsequent poor efficacy of the selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) clomiphene citrate (CC) in treating steroid-induced azoospermia following Nebido® cessation and describe that initial oligozoospermia, existing before starting Nebido®, largely contributes to that treatment outcome. Methodology Setting: Department of Human Reproduction and Department of Endocrinology, Clinical Hospital Center Rijeka, Rijeka, and Department of Endocrinology, Clinical Hospital Center Sestre milosrdnice, Zagreb, Croatia. Patient: A male patient having been diagnosed with primary hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, oligozoospermia and low testosterone (T) level, was treated with intramuscular testosterone undecanoate (TU) depot 1 g (Nebido®) to prevent further progression of testosterone deficiency symptoms (low mood, energy and concentration, fatigue, muscle weakness). Interventions: Stopping Nebido® and treatment with CC 50 mg per day 5 days per week for 3–6 month to recover spermatogenesis. Main outcome measures: T levels and semen analyses. Results Semen analyses did not return to values before taking Nebido® 1 year after cessation nor after 3 months of treatment with CC. Values of T, follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) dropped even more than before starting Nebido®, after 1 year of cessation. Conclusions Here we describe a case of initially idiopathic gonadal failure with subsequent secondary gonadal failure and infertility resulting from testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) treatment, and poor spermatogenesis recovery outcome of CC used post Nebido® cessation.
