Osteoporosis, characterized by low bone mass and a disruption of bone microarchitecture, is traditionally treated using drugs or lifestyle modifications. Recently, several preclinical and clinical studies have investigated the effects of selenium on bone health, although the results are controversial. Selenium, an important trace element, is required for selenoprotein synthesis and acts crucially for proper growth and skeletal development. However, the intake of an optimum amount of selenium is critical, as both selenium deficiency and toxicity are hazardous for health. In this review, we have systematically analyzed the existing literature in this field to determine whether dietary or serum selenium concentrations are associated with bone health. In addition, the mode of administration of selenium as a supplement for treating bone disease is important. We have also highlighted the importance of using green-synthesized selenium nanoparticles as therapeutics for bone disease. Novel nanobiotechnology will be a bridgehead for clinical applications of trace elements and natural products.

Background: Selenium deficiency is widespread in the Malawi population. The selenium concentration in maize, the staple food crop of Malawi, can be increased by applying selenium-enriched fertilizers. It is unknown whether this strategy, called agronomic biofortification, is effective at alleviating selenium deficiency.Objectives: The aim of the Addressing Hidden Hunger with Agronomy (AHHA) trial was to determine whether consumption of maize flour, agronomically-biofortified with selenium, affected the serum selenium concentrations of women, and children in a rural community setting.Design: An individually-randomized, double-blind placebo-controlled trial was conducted in rural Malawi. Participants were randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to receive either intervention maize flour biofortified with selenium through application of selenium fertilizer, or control maize flour not biofortified with selenium. Participant households received enough flour to meet the typical consumption of all household members (330 g capita−1 day−1) for a period of 8 weeks. Baseline and endline serum selenium concentration (the primary outcome) was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS).Results: One woman of reproductive age (WRA) and one school-aged child (SAC) from each of 180 households were recruited and households were randomized to each group. The baseline demographic and socioeconomic status of participants were well-balanced between arms. No serious adverse events were reported. In the intervention arm, mean (standard deviation) serum selenium concentration increased over the intervention period from 57.6 (17.0) μg L−1 (n = 88) to 107.9 (16.4) μg L−1 (n = 88) among WRA and from 46.4 (14.8) μg L−1 (n = 86) to 97.1 (16.0) μg L−1 (n = 88) among SAC. There was no evidence of change in serum selenium concentration in the control groups.Conclusion: Consumption of maize flour biofortified through application of selenium-enriched fertilizer increased selenium status in this community providing strong proof of principle that agronomic biofortification could be an effective approach to address selenium deficiency in Malawi and similar settings.Clinical Trial Registration:http://www.isrctn.com/ISRCTN85899451, identifier: ISRCTN85899451.

Viral infections have afflicted human health and despite great advancements in scientific knowledge and technologies, continue to affect our society today. The current coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic has put a spotlight on the need to review the evidence on the impact of nutritional strategies to maintain a healthy immune system, particularly in instances where there are limited therapeutic treatments. Selenium, an essential trace element in humans, has a long history of lowering the occurrence and severity of viral infections. Much of the benefits derived from selenium are due to its incorporation into selenocysteine, an important component of proteins known as selenoproteins. Viral infections are associated with an increase in reactive oxygen species and may result in oxidative stress. Studies suggest that selenium deficiency alters immune response and viral infection by increasing oxidative stress and the rate of mutations in the viral genome, leading to an increase in pathogenicity and damage to the host. This review examines viral infections, including the novel SARS-CoV-2, in the context of selenium, in order to inform potential nutritional strategies to maintain a healthy immune system.

The extension of the characteristics of the cattle ration is widely spread nowadays. One of the most significant nutritional element is selenium. Selenium has antioxidant function because it is a necessary part of the antioxidant enzyme glutathione peroxidase. There is a deficiency of selenium on the large territories of Russian Federation, especially on North-Western region. The selenium deficiency is the reason of different metabolic diseases and stiff lamb disease. All of the aforesaid leads to production loss. In this article it is firstly reported about selenium status, biochemistry characteristics and their variations after treatment selenium –containing drug among Romanov sheep in north-western region. In the course of study was found that selenium concertation in sheep serum was lower than normal. The selenium drug administration was led to an increase of serum selenium concertation

Abstract Aims Most crops are supplemented with selenium (Se) through the exogenous addition of inorganic selenium fertilizer. There is a lack of in-depth research on organic selenium fertilizers. Meanwhile, the dosage range between human selenium deficiency and selenium toxicity is narrow, so the selenium content of agricultural products needs to be controlled within a reasonable interval. Methods W e analyzed and compared the Se accumulation and speciation in rice during three different growth stages (late tillering stage, initiate heading stage, and full heading stage) using three selenium fertilizers, selenite, fermented Se, and potassium Selenocyanoacetate (Se-AAF) via the foliar application. Results The selenium content in rice sprayed with organic selenium fertilizer was controlled in the relatively safe range and met the human selenium supplement requirement compared to the sprayed sodium selenite, which was too high of a dose. The percentage of organic Se and protein Se in brown rice was found to be similar in all three Se fertilizers. The highest organic selenium content of 91.57% was found in the grain of rice at the full heading stage by spraying Se-AAF. The main Se species in the grain was selenomethionine (SeMet), which reached 80% of the total selenium. Se-methyl selenocysteine(SeMeCys) was found only in Se-AAF. The grain quality showed that all three Se fertilizers increased the consistency of gelatinization. Conclusions Appropriately delaying the spraying time and selecting organic Se fertilizer as the Se source can help to produce green and safe selenium-rich rice.
