A reinvestigation of the native iron bearing rocks of northern Disko has been initiated as a follow up of new regional mapping. A variety of hypotheses as to formation have been put forward since the work of Steenstrup (1882a); a bibliography is given by Bøggild (1953) and a recent review by Pauly (1969). In addition to examination of the nature of the deposits as such, the purpose of the new investigations is twofold. (1) To map the native iron bearing volcanic rocks which ean be used as stratigraphical marker horizons. (2) To investigate the possibie economic potential of segregations of native iron and sulphides found in these rocks.

The purpose of the summer's field work was twofold: (a) to search for native iron and sulphide mineral assemblages in the northem extension of the Kitdlit dyke (Fundal, 1975; Pedersen, 1977a & 'a' in figs 10 & 11) and other related (sediment contaminated) dykes, and (b) to map the surrounding area as a contribution to the map sheet Diskofjord (69 V. 1 N, fig. 2). About 600 km2 were mapped in detail and 1500 km2 briefly surveyed.

This paper reports the results of about three weeks investigations in the summer of 1974 in the area between Gieseckes Dal and Hammers Dal, north-west Disko. The area was previously poorly known. Short accounts are given by Münther (1952, 1973), who discovered two volcanic necks with native iron bearing rocks south of Gieseckes Dal. Henderson (1973) has made photogeological work, and V. Münther has compiled an unpublished map of the region. The area is poorly exposed so that the photogeological compilation ofthe area on the geological map sheet 70 V. 1 S, Qutdligssat is incomplete.

This paper reports on the results of three weeks of investigations in the Mellemfjord-Eqaluit area of south-west Disko, carried out in the summer of 1974. Very little has been published on the geology in this area: Steenstrup (1882, 1883, 1900) described the area briefly and concentrated on native iron bearing lavas, from which samples were petrographically decribed by Lorenzen (1882), Nicolau (1900), and Pauly (1969), who also communicated results from an unpublished field report by W. Fisch. The purpose of the present investigation was threefold, namely the study ofthe youngest exposed voicanic rocks on Disko, the study of native iron bearing voicanic rocks and the study of the structure of the coast area which is of interest for the interpretation of the off-shore geology.

In the area between Hammers Dal and Gieseckes Dal on north-west Disko (fig. 10) several native iron bearing intrusions have been found over the years (Münther, 1952, 1973; Pedersen, 1975a). Most of these intrusions were formed at shallow depths as volcanic necks of.iron-bearing, highly contaminated intermediate rocks, which probably served as feeders for the lavas of the Niaqússat member ofthe Maligât Formation (Pedersen, 1975a). In addition a series of interconnected subvolcanic intrusions of a very unusual type - the Hammers Dal Complex (Pedersen, 1975a) - were found in 1972 in the south-facing slopes of Hammers Dal extending a few kilometres towards the north-north-wesl (fig. 11 and Plate 2). Nickel and copper-bearing pyrrhotite mineralization was associated with the wall rock of the intrusions and cumu.late zones of native iron were found in the intllJsions themelves. As these were of potential economic interest a detailed investigation of the complex was desirable. [A preliminary description of the Hammer Dal Complex has aiready been given by Ulff-Møller (1975)].
