Background: Sedentary lifestyle is a major modifiable risk factor that usually starts from childhood. High screen time is associated with sedentary lifestyle in children; and parents might have played a role in screen time among the children. This study aims to assess the role of parents in the screen time of young children aged five to nine years in Pokhara metropolitan city in Nepal. Methods: A cross sectional study was done among 360 children where respondents were one of the parents of those children. Face to face interview was done using a semi structured questionnaire between March 8 and September 4, 2020. A daily screen time <2 hours was taken as a normal value. Descriptive and inferential analyses were done with the data. Chi square test at 5% level of significance was computed for the inferential analysis. The ethical approval was taken from the Nepal Health Research Council. Results: Of the total 360 children, 54.7% were male and 35.6% were aged 9 years. Screen time >2 hours was found among 48.6% children. The screen time of >2 hours children was significantly associated with the educational qualification of parents, parental worry and parental permission to watch the screen for tasks like eating, doing homework, not going out or making free time for parents. The screen time of children was not associated with socioeconomic characteristics like parental occupation. Conclusion: Parental characteristics have role in the screen time of children. Parental factors must also be considered while implementing programs to reduce children’s screen time.

Reza Oktovian, one of the famous YouTuber is not only known for his skill in playing games, but also famous for the audience's criticism of the use of impolite words in his videos. Reza often uses swear words in the videos he uploaded, both in Indonesian and English. Not a few spectators fret by swear words from Reza's video. This issue makes DeddyCorbuzier’s as one of Indonesian legend in entertainment industry and fellow YouTuber interested on creating content about his response for this problem and invited Reza to collaborate in the discussion. This research uses qualitative method and aim to get a deeper understanding about DeddyCorbuzier’s response to Reza Octavian’s inappropriate language  in his videos on YouTube. The result of this study indicates that managing media providers to control the language used in video content because it can be watched and imitated by young children is not the main solution, but the role of parents in assisting children as supervisors and instructors is more efficient. Because it is easier to manage their own children, than taking care of all YouTube content creators.

This study investigates the role played by parents as mediators of young children’s access and engagement with digital technologies. In Belgium, Germany, Latvia and Portugal, qualitative in-depth interviews were conducted with 10 families in each country, including one child between 6 and 7 years old. Our findings show that parents of young children mainly play the role of ‘gatekeepers’ when it comes to facilitating and constraining access to and use of digital technologies. Parents’ perceptions of the efficacy of digital technologies as responsible entertainment and as educational tools influence the technologies available at home and accessible to the child. These perceptions in turn impact parents’ mediation strategies with regard to children’s actual use of digital technologies, with restrictive mediation – of time and less of content – and supervision applied most. The power exerted by parents over access and use may be understood as a limitation of the children’s rights. On the other hand, parents are not always concerned with the right of protection as they believe – sometimes incorrectly – that they are in control of the content their children are exposed to.
