Expert systems employing current methodologies suffer from two major problems: they are brittle and their development is time-consuming and tedious.Learning, the key to intelligent human behavior and expertise, has the potential of alleviating these difficulties. The paper reviews a number of machine learning techniques and provides a framework for their classification. The description of each technique is followed by an example taken from the domain of structural design. The applicability of machine learning techniques to expert systems is discussed, including some prototype applications and their shortcomings. Three promising research directions are outlined as a partial solution for the shortcomings.

This paper is in two sections. The senior author discusses in the first section the reasons for some of the revised provisions in the current Ministry of Works, Structural Design Office, Code of Practice for the design of buildings, while the junior author deals in the second part with the application of these provisions to a reinforced concrete shear core building. He presents methods of designing and detailing a core for ductility and the effect of incremental damage to the spandrels in a coupled shear wall are examined.

This paper summarizes the basic concepts of expert systems and describes some of the applications of three commercially available expert system tools. The function of the various components of the tools is explained using simple design examples. It is concluded that a tool can be employed to develop useful expert systems for real-world applications, provided factual and heuristic material is available for creating a knowledge base. Key words: artificial intelligence, knowledge-based expert systems, knowledge base, inference mechanism, expert system building tools, structural design, applications of expert system building tools.
