AbstractThe paper studies an extension to nonlinear systems of a recently proposed approach to the definition of modal participation factors. A definition is given for local mode-in-state participation factors for smooth nonlinear autonomous systems. While the definition is general, the resulting measures depend on the assumed uncertainty law governing the system initial condition, as in the linear case. The work follows Hashlamoun et al. (IEEE Trans Autom Control 54(7):1439–1449 2009) in taking a mathematical expectation (or set-theoretic average) of a modal contribution measure over an uncertain set of system initial state. Poincaré linearization is used to replace the nonlinear system with a locally equivalent linear system. It is found that under a symmetry assumption on the distribution of the initial state, the tractable calculation and analytical formula for mode-in-state participation factors found for the linear case persists to the nonlinear setting. Abstract The basic problem of satisfaction of boundary conditions is considered when the generalized stress vector is given on the surfaces of elastic plates and shells. This problem has so far remained open for both refined theories in a wide sense and hierarchic type models. In the linear case, it was formulated by I. N. Vekua for hierarchic models. In the nonlinear case, bending and compression-expansion processes do not split and in this context the exact structure is presented for the system of differential equations of von Kármán–Mindlin–Reisner (KMR) type, constructed without using a variety of ad hoc assumptions since one of the two relations of this system in the classical form is the compatibility condition, but not the equilibrium equation. In this paper, a unity mathematical theory is elaborated in both linear and nonlinear cases for anisotropic inhomogeneous elastic thin-walled structures. The theory approximately satisfies the corresponding system of partial differential equations and the boundary conditions on the surfaces of such structures. The problem is investigated and solved for hierarchic models too. The obtained results broaden the sphere of applications of complex analysis methods. The classical theory of finding a general solution of partial differential equations of complex analysis, which in the linear case was thoroughly developed in the works of Goursat, Weyl, Walsh, Bergman, Kolosov, Muskhelishvili, Bers, Vekua and others, is extended to the solution of basic nonlinear differential equations containing the nonlinear summand, which is a composition of Laplace and Monge–Ampére operators.

We present a model for an inhomogeneous and anisotropic early universe filled with a nonlinear electromagnetic field of Born–Infeld (BI) type. The effects of the BI field are compared with the linear case (Maxwell). Since the curvature invariants are well behaved then we conjecture that our model does not present an initial big bang singularity. The existence of the BI field modifies the curvature invariants at t=0 as well as sets bounds on the amplitude of the conformal metric function.

We consider the nonlinear diffusion equation with a perturbed convection term. The potential symmetries for the exact equation with respect to the second conservation law are classified. It is found that these exist only in the linear case. It is further shown that no nontrivial approximate potential symmetries of order one exists for the perturbed equation with respect to the other conservation law.

Abstract. Data assimilation is considered as a problem in Bayesian estimation, viz. determine the probability distribution for the state of the observed system, conditioned by the available data. In the linear and additive Gaussian case, a Monte Carlo sample of the Bayesian probability distribution (which is Gaussian and known explicitly) can be obtained by a simple procedure: perturb the data according to the probability distribution of their own errors, and perform an assimilation on the perturbed data. The performance of that approach, called here ensemble variational assimilation (EnsVAR), also known as ensemble of data assimilations (EDA), is studied in this two-part paper on the non-linear low-dimensional Lorenz-96 chaotic system, with the assimilation being performed by the standard variational procedure. In this first part, EnsVAR is implemented first, for reference, in a linear and Gaussian case, and then in a weakly non-linear case (assimilation over 5 days of the system). The performances of the algorithm, considered either as a probabilistic or a deterministic estimator, are very similar in the two cases. Additional comparison shows that the performance of EnsVAR is better, both in the assimilation and forecast phases, than that of standard algorithms for the ensemble Kalman filter (EnKF) and particle filter (PF), although at a higher cost. Globally similar results are obtained with the Kuramoto–Sivashinsky (K–S) equation.
