AbstractTensor hierarchy algebras are infinite-dimensional generalisations of Cartan-type Lie superalgebras. They are not contragredient, exhibiting an asymmetry between positive and negative levels. These superalgebras have been a focus of attention due to the fundamental rôle they play for extended geometry. In the present paper, we examine tensor hierarchy algebras which are super-extensions of over-extended (often, hyperbolic) Kac–Moody algebras. They contain novel algebraic structures. Of particular interest is the extension of a over-extended algebra by its fundamental module, an extension that contains and generalises the extension of an affine Kac–Moody algebra by a Virasoro derivation $$L_1$$ L 1 . A conjecture about the complete superalgebra is formulated, relating it to the corresponding Borcherds superalgebra.

Suppose the underlying field is of characteristic [Formula: see text]. In this paper, we prove that the automorphisms of the finite-dimensional graded (non-restircited) Lie superalgebras of Cartan-type [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] can uniquely extend to the ones of the infinite-dimensional Lie superalgebra of Cartan-type [Formula: see text]. Then a concrete group embedding from [Formula: see text] into [Formula: see text] is established, where [Formula: see text] is any finite-dimensional Lie superalgebra of Cartan-type [Formula: see text] or [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] is the underlying (associative) superalgebra of [Formula: see text]. The normal series of the automorphism groups of [Formula: see text] are also considered.

The natural filtrations of infinite-dimensional modular Lie superalgebras W and S are proved to be invariant under their automorphism groups by means of investigating the ad-nilpotent elements and determining certain subalgebras generated by ad-nilpotent elements. As an application, we obtain an intrinsic characterization of W and S, and give a property of the automorphisms of these modular Lie superalgebras.

A new family of finite-dimensional modular Lie superalgebras Γ is defined. The simplicity and generators of Γ are studied and an explicit description of the derivation superalgebra of Γ is given. Moreover, it is proved that Γ is not isomorphic to any known Lie superalgebra of Cartan type.

Abstract In this paper, we develop a method to construct holomorphic functions that exist only on infinite dimensional spaces. The following types of holomorphic functions f:U→ℂ on some open subsets U of an infinite dimensional complex Banach space are constructed: (1) f is bounded holomorphic on U and is continuously, but not uniformly continuously extended to U¯; (2) f is continuous on U¯ and holomorphic of bounded type on U, but f is unbounded on U; (3) f is holomorphic of bounded type on U and f cannot be continuously extended to U¯. The technique we develop is powerful enough to provide, in the cases (2) and (3) above, large algebraic structures formed by such functions (up to the zero function, of course).

Certain important results concerning p-envelopes of modular Lie algebras are generalized to the super-case. In particular, any p-envelope of the Lie algebra of a Lie superalgebra can be naturally extended to a restricted envelope of the Lie superalgebra. As an application, a theorem on the representations of Lie superalgebras is given, which is a super-version of Iwasawa's theorem in Lie algebra case. As an example, the minimal restricted envelopes are computed for three series of modular Lie superalgebras of Cartan type.

The Poisson superbracket Lie superalgebra on the supertorus T2d|N is considered and its quantization is carried out. It is shown that there exists a non-trivial supercentral extension by means of 2d arbitrary c-numbers (when N is even), or 2d Grassmann numbers (when N is odd). It is shown that the infinite-dimensional superalgebras on the supertorus T2d|N can be considered as certain generalizations and large-M limits of the classical superalgebras A(M| M) and Q(M) (when N is even and odd respectively).

Recent work has revealed intriguing connections between a Belinsky–Khalatnikov–Lifshitz-type analysis of spacelike singularities in general relativity and certain infinite-dimensional Lie algebras, particularly the "maximally extended" hyperbolic Kac–Moody algebra E10. In this essay we argue that these results may lead to an entirely new understanding of the (quantum) nature of space(–time) at the Planck scale, and hence — via an effective "de-emergence" of space near the singularity — to a novel mechanism for achieving background independence in quantum gravity.

Given a matrix Lie algebra one can construct the 3-Lie algebra by means of the trace of a matrix. In the present paper, we show that this approach can be extended to the infinite-dimensional Lie algebra of vector fields on a manifold if instead of the trace of a matrix we consider a differential 1-form which satisfies certain conditions. Then we show that the same approach can be extended to matrix Lie superalgebras [Formula: see text] if instead of the trace of a matrix we make use of the supertrace of a matrix. It is proved that a graded triple commutator of matrices constructed with the help of the graded commutator and the supertrace satisfies a graded ternary Filippov–Jacobi identity. In two particular cases of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text], we show that the Pauli and Dirac matrices generate the matrix 3-Lie superalgebras, and we find the non-trivial graded triple commutators of these algebras. We propose a Clifford algebra approach to 3-Lie superalgebras induced by Lie superalgebras. We also discuss an application of matrix 3-Lie superalgebras in BRST-formalism.
