AbstractSeveral inorganic/organic nanocomposites were prepared via solution-blending of cage-like octahexyl-polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Oh-POSS) with polystyrene (PS) in THF solvent. FTIR and 29Si-NMR were employed to characterize the structures of the nanocomposites. SEM pictures showed that the sample films were smooth and no POSS aggregation was observed when POSS content was lower than 1.0 wt%. TGA and DSC were used to investigate the thermal property. The results showed that the incorporation of nanosized Oh-POSS enhanced the thermal stability of PS with low POSS content. When 1.0 wt% of Oh-POSS was incorporated into PS matrix, the Tg and Td increased by 7.7 °C and 8.2 °C, respectively. However, higher POSS contents (>1.0 wt%) would deteriorate the thermal property of the nanocomposites due to the severe congregation of POSS..

Under Karstedt’s catalyst, an organic–inorganic hybrid fluorescent nano-molecular dendrimer has been synthesized by grafting silafluorene units onto the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane core through hydrosilylation reaction. The new hybrid molecule exhibits high solid fluorescence quantum efficiency because of the nano-size and large steric hindrance of the polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane core. Thermogravimetric analysis shows that the thermal stability of the target compound is effectively improved by the presence of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane.

AbstractA series of Inorganic/organic nanocomposites were prepared by blending cage-like carboxyl-bearing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (carboxyl-POSS) with polymethyl mathacrylate (PMMA) in THF solvent. FTIR and 29Si-NMR were employed to characterize the structures of the nanocomposites. SEM images showed that the as-prepared films were smooth and no aggregation of carboxyl-POSS was observed. TGA and DSC results showed that the incorporation of small amount of nanosize carboxyl-POSS enhanced the thermal stability of PMMA. When 1.0 wt% of carboxyl-POSS was incorporated into PMMA matrix, the Tg and Td increased by 16.9 °C and 21.0 °C, respectively. However, higher POSS contents (>1.0 wt%) would deteriorate the thermal and mechanical properties of the nanocomposites.

AbstractA Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) containing eight 3- chloropropyl groups was synthesized and incorporated into poly(methyl methacrylates) to form star polymer. First, octa(3-chloropropyl) POSS [(ClCH2CH2CH2)8Si8O12] was prepared by hydrolysis and condensation of 3- chloropropyltriethoxysilane, and then two star-shaped POSS/PMMA composites with different POSS content was synthesized at 110 °C, using octa(3-chloropropyl) POSS as an multifunctional initiator, CuCl and 2-2’ bipyridine (Bpy) as catalyst system. The structures of octa(3-chloropropyl) POSS and star-shaped POSS/PMMA composite were characterized by analytical methods including FTIR, NMR, GPC and XRD, with results showing that POSS molecule was successfully formed which accorded well with the reported work and was dispersed into PMMA matrix evenly by atom transfer radical polymerization method. The TGA results indicated that synthetic POSS molecule possessed good thermal stability, and the thermal stability of POSS/PMMA composite enhanced with the increase of POSS content, which is due to the incorporation of inorganic POSS molecule

AbstractIn this study, thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPUs) containing trisilanol isooctyl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS), a reactive nanofiller, were synthesized and characterized rheologically and morphologically, and the effects of POSS content on the melt thermal stability of the TPUs are investigated. Samples containing 0, 0.23, 0.57, 1.14, and 2.23% (w/w) POSS were synthesized by reactive extrusion and characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), oscillatory and extensional rheometry, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS and WAXS, respectively). The rheological properties of molten TPU are time-dependent and the melt thermal stability of the TPU is maximal at 1.14% of POSS. The addition of 0.23 and 0.57% POSS promotes strain-hardening at low extensional strain rates (0.01 and 0.10 s−1), not affecting the extensional characteristics at higher strain rates. The addition of increasing amounts of POSS leads to the formation of POSS-rich clusters well dispersed in the TPU matrix. SAXS and WAXS results show that the POSS domains are amorphous and that POSS does not modify the crystalline structure of TPU. Therefore, this work indicates that synthesizing TPU in the presence of trisilanol isooctyl POSS can increase the melt thermal stability of the polymer, facilitating its processing.
