An ellipse describes the polarized part of a partially polarized quasi-monochromatic plane wave field. Its azimuth angle and aspect ratio are functions of the elements of the covariance matrix associated with the polarized part at a particular time instant. Given an ensemble of K independent samples at that time, the distributions of the estimators of these parameters are derived. The estimation is thus based on a sample ensemble at any time, and does not assume temporal stationarity. Additionally, the azimuth angle estimator has an angular distribution so that non-standard statistical methods are needed when deriving its mean and standard deviation.

A location method based on seismic wave detection was put forward. The seismic wave was collected by high-precision seismic sensors which were set as five-element-square-array structure. The distance and azimuth angle were acquired according to the time delay estimation between each sensor. The result of experiment shows that the location method is effective and has a high precision.

The availability of wide-azimuth data and the use of reverse time migration (RTM) have dramatically increased the capabilities of imaging complex subsalt geology. With these improvements, the current obstacle for creating accurate subsalt images now lies in the velocity model. One of the challenges is to generate common image gathers that take full advantage of the additional information provided by wide-azimuth data and the additional accuracy provided by RTM for velocity model updating. A solution is to generate 3D angle domain common image gathers from RTM, which are indexed by subsurface reflection angle and subsurface azimuth angle. We apply these 3D angle gathers to subsalt tomography with the result that there were improvements in velocity updating with a wide-azimuth data set in the Gulf of Mexico.

A simple procedure for the measurement of the degree of linear polarization at a synchrotron radiation station is described. The diffraction pattern from a glass plate set perpendicular to the incident beam is registered using a two-dimensional area detector. The intensity variation along the azimuth angle ρ at a constant diffraction angle is fitted to the theoretical cos2ρ dependence. The results of measurements performed at a synchrotron radiation station with a CCD detector on the beam from a bending magnet are presented.
