Abstract Objectives The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between anamnestic, axiographic and occlusal parameters and postural control in healthy women aged between 41 and 50 years. Materials and methods A total of 100 female participants aged between 41 and 50 (45.12 ± 2.96) years participated in the study. In addition to completing a general anamnesis questionnaire, lower jaw movements were measured axiographically, dental occlusion parameters were determined using a model analysis and postural parameters were recorded using a pressure measurement platform. The significance level was 5%. Results An increasing weight and a rising BMI lead to a weight shifted from the rearfoot (p ≤ 0.01/0.04) to the forefoot (p ≤ 0.01/0.02). A limited laterotrusion on the right resulted in a lower forefoot load and an increased rearfoot load (p ≤ 0.01). Laterotrusion to the left (extended above the standard) showed a lower frontal sway (p ≤ 0.02) and a reduced elliptical area, height and width (p ≤ 0.01, 0.02, 0.03). Thus, the extent of deviation correlated with reduced right forefoot loading (p ≤ 0.03) and the extent of deflection correlated with increased left foot loading (p ≤ 0.01). The higher the extent of angle class II malocclusion, the larger the ellipse area (p ≤ 0.04) and the ellipse height (p ≤ 0.02) resulted. Conclusions There is a connection between weight, BMI and laterotrusion, as well as between angle class II malocclusion and postural control in women aged between 41 and 50 years. Interdisciplinary functional examinations of mandibular movements treating possible limitations can be conducive for an improvement of postural control. Clinical relevance Angle class II malocclusion has a negative influence on postural control.

Introduction: A stable state of musculoskeletal system is provided by harmony of occlusion, the anatomy of temporomandibular joints, and the activity of the masticatory muscles under the control of peripheral and central nervous system. Surface electromyography (EMG) is a well-used modality and is used in dentistry to access the status of the muscles of mastication. The aim of the research was to evaluate the EMG-characteristic of masticatory muscles in patients with TMD and Angle Class II malocclusion. Materials and methods: The study comprised 23 patients with Angle Class II malocclusion and TMD. The average age of the subjects was 26,5 ± 2,3 years. Malocclusion was evaluated according to Angle classification, TMD – according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC/TMD). Registration of EMG-activity of masseter and anterior temporalis muscles was performed during maximum voluntary clenching, clenching on the right and left sides. Results: EMG-activity of masticatory muscles are characterized by: 1) increased values of EMG-activity of temporal and masseter muscles – peak and average amplitude in tests of unilateral clenching and maximum clenching (values are greater than 2000 μV); 2) in unilateral clenching of jaws (on the left or right) the increased EMG-activity was detected on the balancing side; 3) in unilateral clenching of jaws (on the left or right) the increased muscle activity on the working side with disproportional (asymmetric) load distribution between masseter and temporal muscles has been found. Conclusions: Patients with Angle Class II malocclusion and TMD were found features of EMG-activity of masticatory muscles.

INTRODUCTION: Oral habits may interfere on the growth and development of the stomatognathic system and orofacial myofunctional conditions, producing changes in the position of teeth in their dental arches. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to verify the presence of deleterious oral habits in individuals with malocclusion and see if there is a predominance of Class II malocclusion in these individuals. METHODS: The records of 140 patients treated at the Clinic of Preventive Orthodontics FORP-USP who had already completed treatment were randomly selected and analyzed. Their ages ranged from 6 to 10 years and 11 months. Associations were made between the presence or absence of deleterious oral habits, type and number of habits found in each individual and the type of malocclusion according to Angle classification. The statistical analysis used was the Chi-square test with a significance level of 5%. History of deleterious oral habits was found in 67.1% of individuals. RESULTS: The Class I malocclusion was most frequent (82.9%), followed by Class II malocclusion (12.1%) and Class III (5%). CONCLUSION: There was a predominance of Class II malocclusion in individuals with a history of deleterious oral habits.

The present case report addresses the treatment of an Angle Class II malocclusion in an adult female patient, long face pattern, with posterior open bite and dental arches extremely expanded, due to previous treatment. The patient and parents rejection to a treatment with orthognathic surgery led to orthodontic camouflage of the skeletal discrepancies. This clinical case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Facial Orthopedics (BBO) as one of the requirements to become a BBO Diplomate.

The case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (BBO), with DI equal to or greater than 10, as a requirement for the title of certified by the BBO.

Objective. In this study we tried to notice the differences in the number and type of occlusal contacts present in patients with Angle Class I and Class-II malocclusions. Materials and methods. For this study were examined 30 patients with Angle Class I and Class-II malocclusions. Identification of the number and type of occlusal contacts was made both clinically and with the help of study casts mounted in an semiadjustable articulator. Results and discussion. In the Angle Class I malocclusion average total number of occlusal contacts was 36.93 and in Angle Class-II malocclusion was 31.46 contacts. Most occlusal contacts identified were side cusp – side fossa type. Following statistical analysis we did not fi nd significant differences between the two classes of malocclusions, in terms of total number of occlusal contacts. Conclusions. The total number of occlusal contacts does not differ depending on the malocclusion class, but there are differences between the number of contacts occurring within certain groups of posterior teeth. In order to have findings with practical application it is necessary to carry out more studies on the type and number of occlusal contacts that may occur in individuals with malocclusions.

Abstract Malocclusions with a hyperdivergent vertical facial pattern are often difficult to treat without a combined surgical/orthodontic approach. The aim of this article is to describe a nonsurgical approach to the treatment of a high-angle Class II malocclusion in a growing patient. Some fundamental aspects, such as correct diagnosis, treatment timing, favorable mandibular growth pattern, and patient compliance, proved to be critical to correct the severe dentoskeletal disharmony.

Angle Class II malocclusion associated with anterior open bite in adult patients demands a carefully elaborated orthodontic planning, aiming at restoring not only harmonious dental and facial esthetics, but also a balanced masticatory function. Orthognathic surgery or permanent teeth extraction are often the choice of treatment, therefore, treatment decision is related to all dental, skeletal and functional aspects. The present report discusses orthodontic compensation carried out by means of upper premolar extraction performed to correct the Class II canine relationship and, consequently, the anterior open bite, accepting that the upper incisors be retroclined. This clinical case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (BBO) as part of the requirements for obtaining the BBO Certification.

This clinical case reports the treatment of an Angle Class II malocclusion in a young woman with a balanced face affected by agenesis of second and third mandibular molars and subsequent extrusion of second maxillary molars. The atypical and peculiar occlusal anomaly led to individualized treatment proposed in order to normalize dental malpositions, with subsequent rehabilitation of edentulous areas by means of a multidisciplinary approach. This case was presented to the Brazilian Board of Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics (BBO) in partial fulfillment of the requirements for obtaining the title of certified by the BBO.
