High-resolution X-Band radar measurements of currents, bathymetry and sea state in highly inhomogeneous coastal areas

Satellite altimeters provide continuous information of the sea level variability and mesoscale processes for the global ocean. For estimating the sea level above the geoid and monitoring the full ocean dynamics from altimeters measurements, a key reference surface is needed: The Mean Dynamic Topography (MDT). However, in coastal areas, where, in situ measurements are sparse and the typical scales of the motion are generally smaller than in the deep ocean, the global MDT solutions are less accurate than in the open ocean, even if significant improvement has been done in the past years. An opportunity to fill in this gap has arisen with the growing availability of long time-series of high-resolution HF radar surface velocity measurements in some areas, such as the south-eastern Bay of Biscay. The prerequisite for the computation of a coastal MDT, using the newly available data of surface velocities, was to obtain a robust methodology to remove the ageostrophic signal from the HF radar measurements, in coherence with the scales resolved by the altimetry. To that end, we first filtered out the tidal and inertial motions, and then, we developed and tested a method that removed the Ekman component and the remaining divergent part of the flow. A regional high-resolution hindcast simulation was used to assess the method. Then, the processed HF radar geostrophic velocities were used in synergy with additional in situ data, altimetry, and gravimetry to compute a new coastal MDT, which shows significant improvement compared with the global MDT. This study showcases the benefit of combining satellite data with continuous, high-frequency, and synoptic in situ velocity data from coastal radar measurements; taking advantage of the different scales resolved by each of the measuring systems. The integrated analysis of in situ observations, satellite data, and numerical simulations has provided a further step in the understanding of the local ocean processes, and the new MDT a basis for more reliable monitoring of the study area. Recommendations for the replicability of the methodology in other coastal areas are also provided. Finally, the methods developed in this study and the more accurate regional MDT could benefit present and future high-resolution altimetric missions.

In-service monitoring can help to increase safety of ships especially regarding the fatigue assessment. For this purpose, it is compulsory to know the environmental conditions encountered: wind, but also the full directional wave spectrum. During the EU TULCS project, a full scale measurements campaign has been conducted onboard the CMA-CGM 13200 TEU container ship Rigoletto. She has been instrumented to measure deformation of the ship as well as the sea state encountered during its trip. This paper will focus on the sea state estimation. Three systems have been installed to estimate the sea state encountered by the Rigoletto: An X-band radar from Ocean Waves with WAMOS® system and two altimetric wave radars from RADAC®. Nevertheless, the measured significant wave height can be disturbed by several external elements like bow waves, sprays, sea surface ripples, etc… Furthermore, ship motions are also measured and can provide another estimation of the significant wave height using a specific algorithm developed by DCNS Research for the TULCS project. As all those estimations are inherently different, it is necessary to make a fusion of those data to provide a single estimation (“best estimate”) of the significant wave height. This paper will present the data fusion process developed for TULCS and show some first validation results.

Abstract. Polarimetric radar-based hydrometeor classification is the procedure of identifying different types of hydrometeors by exploiting polarimetric radar observations. The main drawback of the existing supervised classification methods, mostly based on fuzzy logic, is a significant dependency on a presumed electromagnetic behaviour of different hydrometeor types. Namely, the results of the classification largely rely upon the quality of scattering simulations. When it comes to the unsupervised approach, it lacks the constraints related to the hydrometeor microphysics. The idea of the proposed method is to compensate for these drawbacks by combining the two approaches in a way that microphysical hypotheses can, to a degree, adjust the content of the classes obtained statistically from the observations. This is done by means of an iterative approach, performed offline, which, in a statistical framework, examines clustered representative polarimetric observations by comparing them to the presumed polarimetric properties of each hydrometeor class. Aside from comparing, a routine alters the content of clusters by encouraging further statistical clustering in case of non-identification. By merging all identified clusters, the multi-dimensional polarimetric signatures of various hydrometeor types are obtained for each of the studied representative datasets, i.e. for each radar system of interest. These are depicted by sets of centroids which are then employed in operational labelling of different hydrometeors. The method has been applied on three C-band datasets, each acquired by different operational radar from the MeteoSwiss Rad4Alp network, as well as on two X-band datasets acquired by two research mobile radars. The results are discussed through a comparative analysis which includes a corresponding supervised and unsupervised approach, emphasising the operational potential of the proposed method.

Abstract. Compared to the other continents and lands, Antarctica suffers from a severe shortage of in situ observations of precipitation. APRES3 (Antarctic Precipitation, Remote Sensing from Surface and Space) is a program dedicated to improving the observation of Antarctic precipitation, both from the surface and from space, to assess climatologies and evaluate and ameliorate meteorological and climate models. A field measurement campaign was deployed at Dumont d'Urville station at the coast of Adélie Land in Antarctica, with an intensive observation period from November 2015 to February 2016 using X-band and K-band radars, a snow gauge, snowflake cameras and a disdrometer, followed by continuous radar monitoring through 2016 and beyond. Among other results, the observations show that a significant fraction of precipitation sublimates in a dry surface katabatic layer before it reaches and accumulates at the surface, a result derived from profiling radar measurements. While the bulk of the data analyses and scientific results are published in specialized journals, this paper provides a compact description of the dataset now archived in the PANGAEA data repository (https://www.pangaea.de, https://doi.org/10.1594/PANGAEA.883562) and made open to the scientific community to further its exploitation for Antarctic meteorology and climate research purposes.
