Perceived social support is considered to be a variable of great importance in the health – disease continuum. Perceived social support refers to one’s confidence that social support or resources are available if needed. The objectives of this research study were to (1) translate and culturally adapt the Medical Outcomes Study – Social Support Survey (MOS; Sherbourne y Stewart, 1991) for the Colombian population, and (2) validate the Colombian version of the MOS. The survey instrument measures perceived social support and was developed for a study of outcomes in patients with chronic disease. The sample consisted of 179 participants (36.7% men and 63.3% women), mean age 38.4 (SD =15.2, range 17 to 86 years) recruited from different cities in Colombia. The results indicated a favorable Cronbach's alpha between components ranging from .921 to .736. A confirmatory analysis was conducted, obtaining a favorable structure for both 4 and 3 factors.

Background and Purpose: Social support is linked to improved glycemic control and psychosocial well-being of patients diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The purpose was to critically evaluate the psychometric properties of social support measures used in this population. Method: A systematic review of measures of social support was performed using 5 databases. Two hundred and fifty-six studies were initially retrieved, and 48 studies met the inclusion criteria for review. Results: The majority used general measures of perceived social support. Only 17% measured positive and negative social support; 92% used a single measure of social support. The Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) was used in 25% of the studies. Conclusions: Using a combination of social support measures and further evaluation of their psychometric properties in this population is recommended.

Abstract Objective To assess the psychometric properties of the Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) considering a sample of elderly users of the primary healthcare facilities of Ribeirão Preto, state of São Paulo, southeast Brazil. Methods The MOS-SSS is a widely used measurement of social support in different contexts, consisting of 19 items with answer categories that range on a 7-point rating scale. Data collection regarding the psychometric properties of the MOS-SSS was performed in a stratified sample of elderly users of primary healthcare facilities of Ribeirão Preto. Data were collected at five district basic health units located in the city through face-to-face interviews. Polychoric correlation matrix and exploratory (EFA) and confirmatory (CFA) factor analyses were performed. Results A total of 357 elderly subjects aged 60 years or older participated in the study (62.7% females). According to the polychoric correlation matrix, higher coefficients of correlation (> 0.90) were detected among 12 pairs of items and grouped into four factors, as suggested for EFA. The results of the CFA confirmed the construct validity of the four-factor structure of the MOS-SSS when applied to our sample, as well as the stability of this model in distinct subsamples. Conclusion The four-factor structure of the MOS-SSS was found to be suitable and presented adequate construct validity for the assessment of social support in elderly users of primary healthcare facilities.

Introduction: Valid and reliable instruments are crucial for measuring perceived social support among people living with HIV (PLHIV). We aimed to investigate the psychometric properties of the English version of the 19-item Medical Outcomes Study Social Support Survey (MOS-SSS) adapted for PLHIV in Myanmar. Methods: Based on a standard cross-cultural procedure, we adapted the MOS-SSS and formed a Myanmar version of the scale (MOS-SSS-M), and then tested its validity and reliability. A sample of 250 eligible PLHIV was collected from a closed Facebook group that included more than 10,000 Myanmars, most of whom were PLHIV.Results: The MOS-SSS-M achieved a Cronbach’s α of 0.82–0.95. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed an acceptable fit index for the four-factor structure. Construct validity was demonstrated by significant association with self-reported HIV stigma and stress levels, and further confirmed by the findings of Rasch analysis. Conclusion: The MOS-SSS-M with a four-factor structure can be used to measure the level and categories of perceived social support among PLHIV in Myanmar.
