Integration of information and communication technology in teaching: Initial perspectives of senior high school teachers in Ghana

To many, the emergence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has done more harm than good to the youth particularly adolescent students. Hence, this study sought to investigate the influence of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) on the academic achievement of students of Holy Child Senior High School in Cape Coast. It specifically examined how ICT improves the academic achievement of students, other uses to which students put ICT/internet facility, its effects on their moral behaviour, and how it can be regulated among students. It also tested relationship between the students’ use of computer and their academic performance at 5% significance level. The study design was the Mixed Method Research type with a population consisting of 70 teachers, 1010 students, their parents and internet café operators in the Metropolis. A sample size of 300 was determined for the study comprising 200 students, 50 teachers and 45 parents randomly selected, while five internet café operators in the Metropolis were purposively chosen. The study recorded a 91.3% retrieval rate. Questionnaires and interview schedules were designed to solicit information from the respondents. The SPSS was used to analysis the data gathered. The study confirms that ICT/internet has a positive influence on the academic performance of students. It is recommended that students should be allowed and encouraged to use ICT/internet strictly for only academic purposes.

This research was aimed at finding out how the condition of students interest in writing procedural text by using Cooking academy game at Telkom Senior high School. As a student learning by ICT (Information and Communication Technology) becomes a fundamental requirement in determining quality and effectiveness of learning process. This research was conducted at eleven grade students at Telkom senior high school with 34 students as a sample. This research used a qualitative descriptive method. The data instruments were questionnaire  and interview. The result showed that most of the students had difficulties in writing procedural text, they and needed a media for helping them in learning process. Based on the interview of the students Telkom senior high school interested in Cooking Academy game in writing procedural text, after doing Cooking Academy game their vocabulary became more varied and easier poured into a text and writing process became more interesting and enjoyable, they could used it anytime and anywhere. Keywords: Analysis, Writing, Cooking Academy


The effectiveness of the use of ICT in civic education learning is the level of success on the use of ICT in civic education learning at Senior High School in Surakarta, Central Java. This research aims are: (1) to find out whether or not Civic Education teachers have utilized Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in the learning; (2) to find out the factors affecting the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Civic Education learning; and (3) to find out the effectiveness of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Civic Education learning. This study was a qualitative research taken place in Senior High Schools in Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. The sample in this study were civic education teachers and students at senior high school in Surakarta. Sampling technique employed in this study was purposive sampling. Techniques of collecting data used were questionnaire, interview, and observation. Questionnaire was used to collect data on teacher competency in applying Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in Civic Education learning. Interview and observation were used to collect data on the factors affecting the use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and on the effectiveness of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) use in Pancasila and Civic Education learning. Triangulation techniques used to validate the data. The data analyzed using an interactive technique of analysis. Data were analyzed using interactive analysis techniques, which include the stages of data collection, data presentation, data reduction, data verification and conclusions. The result of research showed that (1) the Civic Education teachers used ICT in the learning process; (2) in the application of ICT in the learning process, some supporting factors were needed: teacher competency and adequate infrastructure such as laptop, computer, LCD, projector screen, and internet connection; (3) Learning based on ICT is very effective in Civic Education learning. It is because ICT-based learning can improve concentration, creativity, innovation, and achievement of students in the learning.
