Practical Wisdom Reasoning through Deliberative Pedagogy

Deliberative pedagogy holds promise for improving democratic society by cultivating practical wisdom in students as a means to tackle the problems of democracy, such as polarization. This study embraced an opportunity to consider civic education in the 21st century through deliberative pedagogy by considering practical wisdom in a synchronous, virtual deliberation among university stakeholders and local political candidates concerning our role in 21st-century politics. This civic site enabled an analysis of practical wisdom across three student roles: facilitators enrolled in a deliberation course; students from the wider university; and student alumni of the university’s deliberation center, who had been exposed to deliberation in curricular and cocurricular practice. Using a constructive rhetorical analysis to understand practical wisdom within deliberative pedagogy discourse, we contend that students in these three different roles demonstrated three key aspects of practical wisdom through their discursive responses to rhetorical exigences that arose during deliberative engagement. This analysis offers insights beyond outcomes and informs deeper thinking about curricula and better pedagogical practices. Additionally, such studies, focused on the discourse itself, contribute to understandings concerning the connection between rhetoric and deliberative pedagogy.

Civic Engagement Scholarship: What We Can Learn from the Research

We have selected articles to review from PS: Political Science & Politics that in some way inform civic education designed to promote civic knowledge, skills, and engagement. Our analysis provides a basic overview of these articles so that practitioners and scholars can quickly and easily reference the research and practices reflected in these articles and use these when designing their own course curriculum and assignments. A good many of these papers provide best practices or detailed descriptions of initiatives for easy replicability. This literature review has the modest intent to survey the works described herein in order to identify useful, actionable and broadly relevant research and practices that can easily be deployed to address the crises we currently face.

Deployment of service-learning as a pedagogy for social transformation

Teaching is not only a traditional role of universities, but it remains one of the most critical missions of them. The pedagogy used in teaching determines if learning will be transformational or just transactional. Transactional learning has continually increased university graduates who become a problem to the community instead of being a source of solutions to the community problems. This study introduces service-learning as a transformational learning pedagogy that empowers students to identify problems in their community and enables them to work with the community as co-creators to solve the myriad challenges that the communities battle with daily. The study provides empirical evidence of how the service-learning model is used as an education pedagogy in the informal settlements of Nairobi to train slum dwellers in civic education and development. The study adopted a qualitative approach. The study's findings demonstrate that service-learning enables students to acquire knowledge and skills to deploy in their communities. It provides evidence on how service-learning can be modelled for transformative education. The study results reveal how service-learning as a teaching pedagogy can contribute to students' personal transformation and the social transformation of the community.

Student Self-Assessment Practices in Lower Secondary Education in Kosovo

Self-assessment has a direct impact on students’ achievement. Through self-assessment students have the opportunity to assess themselves in regards to learning goals and assess their achievement. The purpose of our research is to reflect on the use of the self-assessment practices of students in schools, as well as the impact that student self-assessment has on their achievement. Another purpose of this research is to evaluate if students compare their knowledge with other students in the class and to evaluate if students during the self-assessment process can overestimate or underestimate themselves. Two hundred and two students, from four classes of seventh grade (n=112) and four classes of eighth grade (n=90) of lower secondary schools from five urban schools and five rural schools in Kosovo, in the subject Civic Education, participated in the research. The results show that there is a significant difference between seventh-graders and eighth-graders on the use of student self-assessment. There is also a difference between schools in the city and schools in the village. There is a significant difference between classes and based on residence even when the students are asked if they are encouraged to have self-confidence and be independent. PENGARUH MOTIVASI BELAJAR, MANAJEMEN KELAS DAN IMPLEMENTASI PROJECT BASEC LEARNING TERHADAP HASIL BELAJAR PENDIDIKAN KEWARGANEGRAAN.

This study aims to show the positive effect of learning motivation on learning outcomes, the positive influence of classroom management on learning outcomes, the positive influence of project based learning (PBL) implementation on learning outcomes in Civic Education lessons in class VIII SMPS Harvest Christian School Tangerang. The research method used is descriptive analysis method that involved the entire population, namely 26 respondents in class VIII SMPS Harvest Christian School Tangerang. Data was collected using a survey method in the form of a closed questionnaire and a test in the form of a rubric. Data analysis used descriptive statistics, with inferential statistics, and hypothesis testing using SmartPLS version 3.0. This study shows that (a) learning motivation has a positive effect on student learning outcomes; (b) classroom management has a positive effect on student learning outcomes; c) PBL implementation has a positive effect on student learning outcomes in Civic Education learning.

Innovation in Civic Education

Educators, advocacy groups, and policymakers are mobilizing to strengthen civic education across the nation. These renewed commitments must be designed and implemented in ways that ensure today's graduates are ready to effectively engage in modern civic life. Since civic education is key to effective participation in our democracy, ensuring a quality civic education is also an equity issue. Students must have foundational knowledge about our nation's values and government, effectively evaluate the validity of claims in digital media, take and defend positions across multiple platforms, and leverage technology to inform and mobilize their community around ideas they care about. This chapter explores proven practices in civic education and technology-enhanced instructional approaches that schools can leverage to modernize their civic education programs.

PENERAPAN PERILAKU JUJUR MELALUI PEMBELAJARAN PENDIDIKAN KEWARGANEGARAAN DI SEKOLAH DASAR

Honest behavior is the key to better education. In this case, education seems to turn a deaf ear to various problems related to honest problems. For that we need a solution to minimize it. A strategic solution to overcome these problems is to carry out civic education learning in elementary schools. The purpose of this research is to apply honest living behavior through civic education learning in elementary schools. In this case, civics education learning in elementary schools is important to be held because it will form a character attitude for students. Meanwhile, this study uses a qualitative method by conducting a literature study on the opinions of the figures and reviewing journals related to the material. The conclusion of this study is that civic education in elementary schools makes students good citizens because the content of the learning materials taught contains the value of character education, one of which is honest behavior.

Creating the Citizen

This chapter presents an approach to civic education that integrates critical literacy with the research-based promising practices of civic education and the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies Standards. The authors present a definition of critical literacy that reflects a broad-based approach to the concept while exploring what critical literacy may look like within a civic education classroom and the ways in which this reflects a particular approach to good citizenship. Perceived connections between critical literacy, the promising practices, and the dimensions of the C3 Framework are illustrated throughout the chapter, and the authors provide a real-world example to demonstrate what integration may look like in practice through either extra-curricular or classroom-based student engagement.
