Biomass of benthic invertebrates unaffected by industrial damage to lakes despite effects on species composition

Catchment areas of Icelandic rivers are mostly barren or with little vegetation cover in the highlands, but with heathland and mire vegetation in the lowlands. Chemical composition and nutrient availability in Icelandic rivers are influenced by geology, topography and vegetation cover in the river basins. This seems to determine the density and diversity of benthic invertebrates, species composition of anadromous fish and catch of salmon in Icelandic rivers. Species composition of benthic communities is determined by particulate organic matter drifting downstream from river head-waters. Filter feeding blackfly larvae dominate lake outlets, while algal grazing chironomid larvae dominate rivers not influenced by lakes. In well vegetated catchment basins, lake-fed rivers have higher catches of salmon than non-lake fed rivers. Only a few of the rivers flowing from poorly vegetated areas sustain salmon. Glacial rivers have the lowest density and diversity of benthic invertebrates of all river groups and do not sustain fish populations.


Purpose. Study of macrozoobenthos contemporary state in Odessa Bay coastal waters in 2016-2017. Methods. Standard methods of macrozoobenthos sampling, determination, estimation of number and biomass Results. The results of macrozoobenthos biodiversity, structural characteristics and taxonomic composition in Odessa bay coastal waters have been presented. Seasonal dynamics of its number and biomass. has been studied. Assessment of marine environment quality has been performed on the metrics of macrozoobenthos. Conclusions. Altogether 121 taxa of benthic invertebrates were identified in Odessa Bay in 2016-2017. Taxonomic composition and quantitative indicators of macrozoobenthos had clear seasonal variation with maximal development of benthos in summer period. In spring of 2016, 75 taxa of macrozoobenthos were registered in samples, in summer – 82 taxa, in autumn – 60 taxa, in summer of 2017 – 62 taxa. The basis of macrozoobenthos community was formed be mollusks (Mollusca) with domination of species М. galloprovincialis, as well as representatives of Arthropoda and Annelida. Significant input into macrozoobenthos species composition was made by representatives of the following groups: Bryozoa, Nemertea and Platyhelminthes. Contribution of Porifera, Cnidaria and Ph%

The activity of benthic invertebrates was monitored in the water column of slowly flowing backwaters of the Acheron River during summer. Samples were taken throughout 24 h on two occasions, and densities of fauna were compared with densities in drift samples taken concurrently in the main channel. Drift densities were generally higher than those in backwaters, but not by orders of magnitude. Also, drift densities displayed significant die1 variation, whereas densities in backwaters did not consistently show such a pattern. Species composition generally differed between the two habitats. This brief study demonstrates that benthic invertebrates do swim in the water column of stream backwaters and that they may use this opportunity for colonization.

This paper is focused on analysing the difference in distribution, composition and abundance of benthic invertebrates' populations of the rocky coast of Sazan Island (south western Albania), between its eastern and western sides. This study was carried out during 2012-2014, sampling in shallow water. A total of 56 species of benthic macroinvertebrates were recorded. Species composition and their abundance were compared between the four sampling sites and between the two sampling seasons, spring and autumn. Degree of coast exposure and level of environmental impacts seem to be the main factors regarding the difference in species composition and quantitative characteristics of macrozoobenthic community between the eastern and western coasts of the island.
