Abstract We present a detailed analysis of QED corrections to $$ \overline{B}\to \overline{K}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{+}{\mathrm{\ell}}^{-} $$ B ¯ → K ¯ ℓ + ℓ − decays at the double-differential level. Cancellations of soft and collinear divergences are demonstrated analytically using the phase space slicing method. Whereas soft divergences are found to cancel at the differential level, the cancellation of the hard-collinear logs ln mℓ require, besides photon-inclusiveness, a specific choice of kinematic variables. In particular, hard-collinear logs in the lepton-pair invariant mass distribution (q2), are sizeable and need to be treated with care when comparing with experiment. Virtual and real amplitudes are evaluated using an effective mesonic Lagrangian. Crucially, we show that going beyond this approximation does not introduce any further infrared sensitive terms. All analytic computations are performed for generic charges and are therefore adaptable to semileptonic decays such as $$ \overline{B}\to D\mathrm{\ell}\overline{\nu } $$ B ¯ → D ℓ ν ¯ .

There are many fundamental aspects of Galactic structure and evolution which can be studied best or exclusively with high quality three dimensional kinematics. Amongst these we note as examples determination of the orientation of the stellar velocity ellipsoid, and the detection of structure in velocity-position phase space. The first of these is the primary limitation at present to reliable and accurate measurement of the Galactic gravitational potential. The second is a critical test of current standard models of Galactic formation and evolution.

A new generalization of the vector Schwinger model is considered where gauge symmetry is broken at the quantum mechanical level. By proper extension of the phase space this broken symmetry has been restored in two different ways. One of these two leads to a BRST-invariant effective action. An equivalent gauge-invariant theory is reformulated even in the usual phase space also.

Large samples of K± → 3π and K± → π+π-e±ν (Ke4) decays have been collected by the NA48/2 experiment at CERN SPS. At the π+π- threshold, the π0π0 invariant mass spectrum of the decay K± → π±π0π0 xhibits a Wigner cusp, from which the S-wave ππ scattering lengths are extracted with high precision. The same scattering lengths are also independently determined from the accurate measurement of the form factors in the Ke4 decay K± → π+π-e±ν.
