Abstract The rare three-body decay of a Higgs boson to a lepton-antilepton pair and a photon is starting to become experimentally accessible at the LHC. We investigate how higher-order QCD corrections to the dominant gluon-fusion production process impact on the fiducial cross sections in this specific Higgs decay mode for electrons and muons. Corrections up to NNLO QCD are found to be sizeable. They are generally uniform in kinematical variables related to the Higgs boson, but display several distinctive features in the kinematics of its individual decay products.

Abstract The production of weak gauge bosons, W± and Z, are at the core of the LHC precision measurement program. Their transverse momentum spectra as well as their pairwise ratios are key theoretical inputs to many high-precision analyses, ranging from the W mass measurement to the determination of parton distribution functions. Owing to the different properties of the W and Z boson and the different accessible fiducial regions for their measurement, a simple one-dimensional correlation is insufficient to capture the differing vector and axial-vector dynamics of the produced lepton pair. We propose to correlate them in two observables, the transverse momentum qT of the lepton pair and its azimuthal separation ∆ϕ. Both quantities are purely transverse and therefore accessible in all three processes, either directly or by utilising the missing transverse momentum of the event. We calculate all the single-differential qT and ∆ϕ as well as the double-differential (qT, ∆ϕ) spectra for all three processes at N3LL′+N2LO accuracy, resumming small transverse momentum logarithms in the soft-collinear effective theory approach and including all singlet and non-singlet contributions. Using the double-differential cross sections we build the pairwise ratios $$ {\mathrm{\mathcal{R}}}_{W^{+}/Z} $$ ℛ W + / Z , $$ {\mathrm{\mathcal{R}}}_{W^{-}/Z} $$ ℛ W − / Z , and $$ {\mathrm{\mathcal{R}}}_{W^{+}/{W}^{-}} $$ ℛ W + / W − and determine their uncertainties assuming fully correlated, partially correlated, and uncorrelated uncertainties in the respective numerators and denominators. In the preferred partially correlated case we find uncertainties of less than 1% in most phase space regions and up to 3% in the lowest qT region.

Abstract We present state-of-the-art predictions for transverse observables relevant to colour-singlet production at the LHC, in particular the transverse momentum of the colour singlet in gluon-fusion Higgs production and in neutral Drell-Yan lepton-pair production, as well as the $$ {\phi}_{\eta}^{\ast } $$ ϕ η ∗ observable in Drell Yan. We perform a next-to-next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic (N3LL) resummation of such observables in momentum space according to the RadISH formalism, consistently including in our prediction all constant terms of relative order $$ {\alpha}_s^3 $$ α s 3 with respect to the Born, thereby achieving N3LL′ accuracy. The calculation is fully exclusive with respect to the Born kinematics, which allows the application of arbitrary fiducial selection cuts on the decay products of the colour singlet. We supplement our results with a transverse-recoil prescription, accounting for dominant classes of subleading-power corrections in a fiducial setup. The resummed predictions are matched with fixed-order differential spectra at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) accuracy. A phenomenological comparison is carried out with 13 TeV LHC data relevant to the Higgs to di-photon channel, as well as to neutral Drell-Yan lepton-pair production. Overall, the inclusion of $$ \mathcal{O} $$ O ($$ {\alpha}_s^3 $$ α s 3 ) constant terms, and to a lesser extent of transverse-recoil effects, proves beneficial for the comparison of theoretical predictions to data, leaving a residual theoretical uncertainty in the resummation region at the 2–5% level for Drell-Yan observables, and 5–7% in Higgs production.

The use of the method developed in the CLAS collaboration (Jefferson Lab, USA) of improving leptons momentum for more correct studies of final state selection of quasi-real photoproduction resulting from the reaction to near threshold photoproduction of the $J/\psi$ meson is described. The radiation photons that were detected in electromagnetic calorimeter were studied with electrons and positrons accompanied them in very narrow angles. The method of radiated photon selection of $e^+ e^- p^{\prime}(e^{\prime})$ reaction is given, where $e^+ e^-$ lepton pair is formed during the decay of $J/\psi$ meson.

Abstract The higher-order quantum electrodynamics (QED) effect for vacuum pair production has been searched without success since 1954. In this paper, we show that the combined world-wide data of lepton pair vacuum production is about 20% smaller than the latest lowest order QED calculation with a 5.2 sigma-level of significance and is consistent with the corresponding higher-order QED result. We claim the discovery of higher-order effect for the QED pair production, which settles the dust of previous debates for several decades. The verification of higher-order QED effect is a fundamental scientific problem, which is an important milestone towards the nonperturbative and nonlinear regime of QED vacuum.
