<em>Cicadatra persica</em> Kirkaldy, 1909 (Hemiptera: Cicadidae) is regarded as a potential constraint to the productivity of apple fruit orchards in Erneh (33&deg;21&rsquo;N, 35&deg;52&rsquo;E), near Damascus, Syria. However, no research has been conducted on this pest. This study examined adult emergence, egg laying, and hatching periods. Adults emerged in early June, with an emergence peak in the fourth week of June 2011, and started laying eggs in mid-June. Egg development was approximately 40 days, with the first eggs hatching on 1<sup>st</sup> August 2011 and the final hatch on 17<sup>th</sup> August 2011. The simple and relatively successful method of monitoring egg development reported here may be useful for studying the nymphal ecology and life cycle of this species.

AbstractThe effects of age, egg development, and mating on calling behavior of the bertha armyworm, Mamestra configurata Walker, were studied at 20°C, 60% RH, and a 16-h L: 8-h D photoperiod. Most virgin females called and copulated for the first time during the second or third scotophase after emergence. The first copulation was 17.0 ± 0.2 h (mean±SE) long and was terminated within 1 h after lights off in the scotophase following the initiation of copulation. The ovaries contained the first chorionated eggs before the beginning of the second scotophase after emergence. The first egg laying occurred during the same scotophase in which the first copulation was terminated, i.e. scotophase three or four. Almost 75% of the eggs were laid by the end of the seventh scotophase after emergence. Mated females resumed calling after a refractory period of about 2 days. Once calling was resumed after copulation, most females laid eggs and called nightly, with egg laying occurring during the first 5–6 h and calling during the last 2–3 h of the scotophase. Mated females called for a shorter period during each scotophase than virgin females of the same age (1–3 h vs. 4–6 h). In virgin females, the diel periodicity of calling was advanced and the length of the daily calling period was increased with age until the seventh scotophase after emergence; thereafter, both remained relatively unchanged.

In natural populations of planktonic Cladocera, I observed significant diel, molt cycle, and cohort periodicity of egg laying. Diel cycles of egg laying were pronounced in one population of Daphnia galeata mendotae; most females laid eggs only at dawn. There was a strongly negative correlation between diel egg laying cycles of coexisting Daphnia species. Egg laying in two Daphnia populations cycled with a period approximating the egg development times, suggesting a synchronization of individual molt cycles. Noncontiguous reproduction was characteristic of a population of Holopedium gibberum. Adults reproduced synchronously and then died; there was little overlap of generations.

AbstractThe rate of hatch of overwintered eggs of the strawberry aphid, Chaetosiphon fragaefolii (Cockerell), at five temperatures in controlled environment chambers was used to determine the thermal threshold of development. Samples of eggs were taken from two field locations several times before hatch. These samples were subdivided and placed into two or three different constant temperature chambers. The day-degree requirements for hatching from the time of collection were estimated. These estimates corresponded to the number of day-degrees actually accumulated in the field between the time of egg collection and the time of hatching.This method of simulating the effect of temperature on egg development was an accurate method of predicting the time of hatch in the field at least 3 weeks prior to the observed time.

AbstractThe factors influencing oviposition and feeding of Enoclerus lecontei, and the effect of temperature on egg development and survival, were studied in the laboratory.When food was not a limiting factor, the total number of eggs laid, and the total number of bark beetles consumed by clerid pairs during their lives was strongly influenced by longevity of the female and to a lesser extent by female “vigor”. Female “vigor” and longevity were not necessarily coincident. The rate of oviposition and the rate of food consumption are mainly influenced by the “vigor” of the female clerid.The effect of suboptimal food on oviposition was determined. Regression equations are given for estimating the number of eggs laid utilizing three measures of food supply, number of bark beetles supplied, their weight, and number eaten. The independent variables may be used separately or combined as a multiple regression.Time for egg development varied from 5 days at 35 °C. to 28 days at 15 °C. Optimal conditions for development and survival were between 20° and 25 °C. Eggs can withstand cold storage (7° to 9 °C.) for 10 days before survival is impaired. Thereafter, mortality increases logarithmically until the 100 percentile is reached at about 43 days.
