Web services technologies promise to create new business applications by composing existing services and to publish these applications as services for further composition. The business logic of applications is described by abstract processes consisting of tasks which specify the required functionality. Web services provision refers to assigning concrete Web services to perform the constituent tasks of abstract processes. It describes a promising scenario where Web services are dynamically chosen and invoked according to their up-to-date functional and non-functional capabilities. It introduces many challenging problems and has therefore received much attention. In this article, the authors provide a comprehensive overview of current research efforts. The authors divide the lifecycle of Web services provision into three steps: service discovery, service selection, and service contracting. They also distinguish three types of Web services provision according to the functional relationship between services and tasks: independent provision, cooperative provision and multiple provision. Following this taxonomy, we investigate existing works in Web services provision, discuss open problems, and shed some light on potential research directions.

Accessing multimedia services from portable devices in nomadic environments is of increasing interest for mobile users. Service discovery mechanisms help mobile users freely and efficiently locating multimedia services they want. The chapter first provides an introduction to the topic service discovery and content location in mobile environments, including background and problems to be solved. Then, the chapter presents typical architectures and technologies of service discovery in infrastructure-based mobile environments, covering both emerging industry standards and advances in the research world. Their advantages and limitations, as well as open issues are discussed, too. Finally, the approaches for content location in mobile ad hoc networks are described in detail. The strengths and limitations of these approaches with regard to mobile multimedia services are analyzed.

Service discovery is an important component of wireless and mobile network systems. An efficient service discovery mechanism would ensure high availability of services to users and applications, and high utilization of services. In this chapter, we discuss various issues and challenges facing the design and selection of a proper service discovery mechanism. This chapter also investigates service discovery mechanisms such as SLP, Jini, Salutation, and others, and assesses their suitability for applications in wireless and mobile environments.

Mobile services have gained in importance for their ability to be consumed by mobile users regardless of their location. Mobile consumers are exposed to a large pool of services such as location-based applications, medical information, financial management, investments, and more. However, mobile service discovery needs further research to efficiently and effectively support mobility-related constraints such as availability, heterogeneity, and resource constrained devices. In this chapter, the authors define several criteria relating to mobile service discovery and categorize state-of-the-art service discovery approaches according to those criteria while paying particular attention to architectural choices, service description, and service discovery using semantic and reasoning techniques. The authors evaluate the approaches to identify their advantages and shortcomings and propose guidelines for future research for service discovery in mobile environments.
