In this study, we report the synthesis of SiO2@TiO2 core-shell nanocomposite particles by ultrasound irradiation of a mixture of dispersed SiO2 nanoparticles, titanium-tetra-n-butoxide (TBOT), and ammonia in an ethanol-water solution medium. The resulting core-shell nanocomposite particles were characterized by SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, XRF, zeta potential measurements, XRD, and UV-visible spectroscopy. Results showed that TiO2 nanoparticles coated on the surface of SiO2 were 6–10 nm in size and retained an anatase crystalline phase. Zeta potential measurements confirmed that the surface property of the SiO2 changed after TiO2 coating. SiO2@TiO2 core-shell particles demonstrated better decolorization of methylene blue dye compared to commercial TiO2 in aqueous solution under UV light. After treatment, the catalysts were separated with low-speed centrifugation and successfully reused four times without loss of activity. This study may provide some inspiration for the synthesis of other metal oxide-metal oxide core-shell nanocomposite materials through ultrasound irradiation.

Abstract Starch based Carbon nanotubes-iron oxide (CNT-IO) and Carbon Nanotubes-Zirconium oxide (CNT-ZO) Nanocomposites (NCs) were fabricated by using facile microwave irradiation technique from different plant-based starch sources namely Tapioca sago (TS), Hordeum vulgare (HV) and Eleusina coracona (EC) and metal oxide precursor solutions. These NCs were studied using different characterization techniques such as SEM, TEM, XRD, Raman spectroscopy and FTIR spectroscopy. The Structural morphology of Starch based CNT-IO and CNT-ZO NCs observed like a rolled tubular structures and exhibiting strong blue luminescence with the charge transfer between CNT and Metal oxide. We have evaluated the anti-proliferative and anti-oxidant activity of starch-based CNT-IO and CNT-ZO NCs using MCF-7 cell line compared with the standard drug camptothecin and DPPH assay. Among the various NCs studied antiproliferative activity, CNT-IO and CNT-ZO obtained from starch source Eleusina coracona was effective with IC 50 values of 12.3 and 18.2 µg/mL respectively. Moreover, the enhanced radical scavenging activity has also been observed for these NCs.

The manner in which ZrO2 forms on zirconium at 300°C in air has been discussed in the first reference. In short, monoclinic zirconia nucleates and grows with a preferred orientation relative to the metal substrate. The mode of growth is not well understood since an epitaxial relationship which gives minimum misfit between the zirconium ions in the metal/oxide combination is not realized. The reason may be associated with a thin cubic or tetragonal layer of ZrO2 between the inner oxygen saturated metal and the outer monoclinic zirconia.
