AbstractElectropolishing is electrochemical method used in metal working that has a vital role in production of medical apparatus, in food or electric industry. The purpose of this paper is to determine optimal current parameters and time required for conducting electropolishing process from the perspective of changes of surface microgeometry. Furthermore, effect of different types of mechanical working used before electropolishing on final surface state was evaluated by observation in changes of topography. Research was conducted on electrolytic copper and brass. Analysis of surface geometry and its parameters (Ra, Sa) was used as criterion describing efficiency of chemical electropolishing. Results of the experiment allow for current parameter optimization of electrochemical polishing process for selected non-ferrous alloys with preliminary mechanical preparation of the surface.

<p><strong>Abstract.</strong> Adaptations of <i>Semiology of Graphics: Diagrams, Networks, Maps</i> (Bertin, 1967), and more broadly Jacques Bertin’s graphics research published since the mid-sixties, are manifold. So is the wide range of fields chosen to present various visual transformations and deep interpretations proposed to explain his actual graphical methods. From agriculture to demography, or european electric industry to animal behaviour responding to the light (pill bugs…), anything that can be quantified, compared and classified could fit in some graphic treatment for a better understanding. In this respect, graphics is able to go deeper and faster than any other analysis.</p><p>I would like to present a forgotten, unusual, rather unfinished, attempt to make use of graphics in a french design graduate school pedagogy during the eighties. Obviously, the impact of Bertin's research is huge in the cartography and social or historical sciences, but it seems seldom in the more casual educational domain, and more particularly in graphic design training course. Is it a paradox?</p>

The origins of the electric industry can be traced back to the invention of the battery. However, Energy Storage Systems (ESS) have never been considered as a part of the electricity supply chain. Even though there has been an increase of government mandated storage investments in power grids, market driven investments are still lacking sustainable business models. Now, with the possibility that cost reductions of the technology make it viable for widespread utilization, multiple efforts have been devoted by the academia and industry to design its incorporation into electricity markets. A large majority of the proposals have been devoted to develop mechanisms for their incorporation in ancillary services markets or for arbitrage, considering storage as another market player, both still with little success in providing sustainable benefits to energy consumers and investors alike. In this paper, we demonstrate that Large Scale Energy Storage excels when incorporated as a service provider in electricity markets. Our proposal considers ESS as a grid resource, available to the ISO to achieve the optimal mix of resources in the day ahead dispatch. We demonstrate that in the Colombian system, a large ESS used in this manner may achieve high benefit-cost ratios. The results also indicate that current market designs need to evolve in order to take better advantage of energy storage and renewable energy resources.
